The MMC principle is a moving coil design.
Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.
Søren Hammer: The MMC principle is a moving coil design.
Not!
The MMC cartridge is a moving iron design. Magnets and coils are stationary while the micro cross moves with the stylus, thereby varying the distances between the arms of the cross and the magnets. The design obviously offers more freedom concerning magnet and coil mass (compared to MC and MM cartridges). For example, the MMC20-range (released in 1978) uses four coils wound around the magnetic cores with 1200 turns each. Minimising the moving mass also reduces unavoidable wear on records.
//Bo.A long list...
There are cut away drawings in many of the catalogues. Moving iron, as stated above. The output is slightly less than the normal moving magnet cartridge. Ortofon use similar principles. Soundsmith still make this type of cartridge and you can find very favourable reviews.

You want the 1979 US catalogue - it goes into every detail about the MMC20 range and has many diagrams and cut away drawings. It is on site for silver and gold members and is my favourite - lots of details about the Beomaster 4400, Beovox M100-2 and Beogram 4004 as well as the Beocord 5000 - the very units that make up my own system. (Well 4401 and '4001' - but essentially the same!) Would love an original copy if anyone has one!
I'd love to see a clear interior illustration.
When i visited Soundsmith to buy my Voice, I brought all (5) MMC 1 & 2s I had for Peter to inspect under magnification and evaluate. Only one was at all lacking, but what really piqued my curiosity was what he said about my MMC1. He said it looked like one of the early ones with the "wire" suspensions that never wears out.
I'd like to know more.
it looks like the elastomer suspension is behind the Moving Micro Cross plate, so having wire suspension instead of elastomer sounds a good idea to me

Thanks for the info, Peter
I've been a Gold member for years, but I have mostly been looking at the service manuals.
I have a Collection af Danish catalogues from 1974 and on (and one from 1966 -and one from 1948, which I got from my parents) - but I must say that this US catalogue is really cool - much more info than in the Danish catalogue from the same year. Now I must check out the catalogue section to look for more goodies...
I wasn't sure if anyone would buy a Voice cartridge at that price !
I have to ask, pfcs49, was it worth the money ?
I've been avoiding your question. Guilt, the gift that keeps on giving!
I paid $1800 cash for it. Even i think that is stupid, but it was kind of a "bucket list" thing. That and the used B&W 801Ns.........and the (used) Krell FPB300 it turned out i needed to drive them well. They say confession is good for the soul.
I'm 66yo garage man, in a wheelchair the last 18. Tired of the work and the worry of my business. Cleaned out all the junk cars in my back lot, and the junkyard gave me $2100 cash. WTF! You only go around once-I travelled to Peter's Place, took the grand tour, told Peter how to fix his Audi, and put my money down! Was it worth it? Fair question. I love it and it is great! Sounds almost like the other 4 MMC1&2s I have. I'm a realist and I don't have golden ears. Probably was unnecessary, but I think I'm set for life. My system is very satisfactory and satisfying. I am slowly getting over my guilt! I guess you can imply from this that a good original mmc1 or mmc2 leaves very little on the table! I got one hell of a great cartridge for a whole lot less than they are now, only a few years later, and am enjoying it.
What is enough?? A question that I am getting better at answering. When it comes to stereos, I am in complete abundance and am enjoying it daily. And I really don't feel guilty-maybe just a little foolish.
Great story about your journey!
P.S. Love my 8002 and MMC 2 rebuilt by Axel, but will probably try a SoundSmith some day.
