Hi everyone!

After obsessing over Bang and Olufsen and poking around on BeoWorld for years, I've just picked up some equipment I've always had my eye on and joined the forum. I came across this eBay listing offering local pick-up close by and jumped on it.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bang-Olufsen-4500-BeoMaster-Stereo-System-/231064141216?nma=true&si=H7Bw13KfiABl41r0moFvOOFKcZE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I'm now the proud owner of a complete BeoSystem 4500 (minus the turntable, I'm still on the hunt for one of those). I am the third owner of the system. The man I bought it from got it included on the wall of an apartment in NYC many years ago and took it with him when he moved.

The condition is very good, even better than I expected from the auction. As a surprise, he even threw in a MCL 2A box and some link cable. That's up for grabs, as I have no use for it.

I'm looking for some help sorting the few issues the system has. As mentioned in the auction, the BeoCord will load a tape and engage "Play," but the tape won't actually turn. It will return to "Stop" a second later. I downloaded the service manual but it is all electronic schematics and not of much help for what seems to be a mechanical issue. Am I and the previous owner correct in assuming this problem is the fault of the belts? If so, where can I source them and how are they replaced?

The other problems, which are more minor, are with the BeoGram CD. The motor for the lid stalls a little bit while lifting. Perhaps this is also the fault of a belt. Also, during playback, there is a faint rubbing/ scuffing sound. You can see a scuff toward the edge of the CD tray but I am unsure if it is related. I suspect the suspension in the unit might have minor damage from being moved without the transport screws secured.

Any input or encouragement is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, probably belts. In cd, did you notice that there is a lever in bracket mounting hole? Is it moving freely, because it positions CD wether it is vertical or horizontal.

Congrats on getting a B&O icon.

It will need a service after all its seen a lot of years use.

A good service now will stand you a lot of years of pleasure.

Bought the same set up a week ago via a Dutch Beoworld member for 100 euro incl. wallbrackets, cable covers, and manuals. All glaspanels were loose (fixed now), CD was not working (replaced C2103 cap and working now) and Beocord needs 3 new belts which I expect to receive today via a good friend of mine.

Congrats on your new system, the most beautiful design ever made.

Thanks!

Make sure that the glass panels have been re-fixed. They are no longer available as spares and as rare as hens teeth on the used market.

If they fall off and break your system is ruined. Be warned!!

Yes, there is a lever. It is fixed in position toward the top of the keyhole. Is that how it should be?

What service is recommended on these units beyond repairing the issues I have found?

Thank you. I agree, especially after experiencing it in person! Sounds like you got a really great deal on your system.

When I first lifted the BeoMaster, the glass panel fell straight to the floor! It didn't break, but I nearly had a heart attack. All of the units have loose panels. I already planned to thoroughly re-adhesive them, then mount the system up on the wall.

Does anyone know what kind of adhesive/tape is recommended? And again, if anyone has a recommendation for a place to buy belts and other parts, let me know.

If it is hanging on the wall and there is screw/bracet in the hole, it (srcew...) pushes lever up. If not on wall it is down.

Actuating it with a screwdriver, the mechanism seems to be working normally. Maybe the issue is with the suspension. Could this kind of problem have been caused by someone moving it without the transport screws engaged?

It is possible if moved without red locking screws. Suspension is 4 coilsprings and it is quite possible that it has jumped out from one or more of them.
