Nice article.  When you have $100,000,000,000 + in the bank, copyrights and patents are hurdles, not roadblocks.

B&O used a wheel even before that on the Master Control Panel ( http://www.lifestyle-av.co.uk/range_info.asp?range_id=48 ). But they were not used for navigation, but used to recreate a "analog" way of controlling the volume, bass, treble.

The Beocom 6000's wheel is indeed navigational.

It is also mentioned in the article that B&O used a wheel on the Beomaster 6000 back in 1974. (Though it was mechanical, and only for tuning)

Quite right. But it would have been nice for B&O to get just a fraction of those $$$ in license...Wink

Sometimes a wheel is not just a wheel...Wink

There are thousands of examples of new versions of things that already has been invented that has been patented.
As long as some inventors can come up with new ideas - new ways of using it - combine it with other technologies etc.

It's not only the wheel that Apple did use as 'inspiration'; how about the extensive use of aluminium in their products? That is a long time cornerstone of B&O productdesign. Surprised me that nobody did see these obvious relationships earlier.

Apple is in the same 'niche' position as B&O; both companies are the only real minimalist modern design producers of consumer electronics in the world to be taken seriously.

Unless you come up with a new material, as "Liquidmetal" for example, you can't patent use of a specific material, i.e. B&O's use of aluminum in its products.

What about the guy who invented this wheel: Should B&O have payed him patent money???

Too long to list....

Judging by the infantile colour scheme, pointless gestures and the amount of bugs IOS7 has, they have clearly been copying Android this time :-/
