This is the second Archived Forum which was active between 1st March 2012 and 23rd February 2022
Hi,
A heads-up for the geeks among you:
I've been allowed to write slightly technical "articles" about B&O loudspeakers on my own personal website. The first instalment can be seen at
http://www.tonmeister.ca/wordpress/2013/11/07/bo-tech-what-is-abl/
Those of you who read the forums here will recognise that posting - since it is basically a slightly edited copy-and-paste of an answer I wrote for a question on beoworld. Probably a bad idea to start with self-plagiarisation and redundancy, but I liked the topic - so my advance apologies.
I have a small list of things I plan to talk about, but if any of you have any questions or suggestions for topics that I could write about - bring 'em on!
Cheers
-geoff
Hello Geoff,
Please, EXPRESS yourself !
Even if I don't understand always what your write, I always learn something each time you explain your work on this forum.
Thanks for this good news.
4 beolab 5, beolab 9, beolab 10, beolab 5000, beolab 8000 mk2, beolab 6002, beolab 3500, beovision 7 55 mk2, 2 beovision 11 46 mk4, beotime, beosound ouverture, beosound essence, beoplay A8, beomaster 900 RG de luxe and the collection continues...
Thanks Geoff!
Some good links there too!

Great!
Sure there will be lots of 'wishes'.
Starting off with one:
Explanation/thoughts of the difference in 'old' (static, if you can describe them so) crossover filters in (B&O-) loudspeakers to the modern 'DSP filtering' used in the 'modern' BL's.
Maybe the question is not 'tech correct' written - but I hope you get what I mean.
Greetings MM
There is a tv - and there is a BV

Great idea! Thanks! This actually triggered 3 article ideas - not just one.
Wow Geoff, a blog by the B&O audio grandmaster itself! A very good idea!
Perhaps it would be a nice idea to show all kind of "tricks" that are possible with B&O masterlink / networklink configurations which are NOT listed in the standard documentations. There seems to be so much hidden behind the B&O world that would make it far more attractive for non B&O people, too.A good example was the Beo 5 when it was introduced: My dealer was more than surprised when he saw my Beo 5 control a Playstation 3, Sony Bluray-Player, Technisat Receiver etc. WITHOUT the help of a B&O PUC or a Lintronic box.Now I need some kind of Beo 5/6 to Philips HUE control option :-)I'm looking forward into reading your blog, Geoff and I bet it's a thousand times more interesting than those modern "Oh, yesterday at 3:51pm I ate a pizza"-nonsense-blogs.
Hi geoff,
glad to hear that!
I know this is (part of) what you write about in your posts, but I often run into 'trouble' when I try to explain why B&O (for decades now) use modern DSP filtering.
A guy like me with 'semi-knowledge' of these things (and probably others too) would be happy to have it explained/sorted out.
Looking foreward to reading....
N.B. take care that no cars are coming your way, when you let your little man drive across the road on his 'motorbike'
Nice video, indeed!
Greetings Millemissen
here is another one:
Why did B&O chooce to develop the 'True Image'-processing instead of using/buying some of the other solutions that are on the marked for up- and downmixing sound?
Dolby as well as DTS offers a great deal of software for this purpose - soon we will even see (means: hear) Dolby Atmos in homecinema equipment.....
Was/is it because B&O simply does a better job, because of the licencing fees, because this way it would be faster/easier to 'create' new 'up-and down mixing modes' and to provide them as updates for the video engine in BV11/....and coming BV's, or for xxx-reasons?
A bit of background info/thoughts on this subject would be nice
Excellent! One of the things that's always interested me is the tech and engineering behind the B&O gear. I can well understand why B&O limits the specs they put out, because in reality they usually tell you almost nothing about the performance*, but I am very interested in what is under the hood and the engineering decisions that got you where you are.
I look forward to following your blog. Sean Olive's technical blog for Harman is always a good read and very informative. I expect you'll find more topics to pontificate on than you have time to do so.
* We used to get people wandering into the stereo shop I worked at in college with this spec sheet/brochure or that, saying of our well built high current amp, well, this cheap amp here, based on IC output stages, specs out at 55 watts, and yours is only 50! So there! Even though their amp would crap it's pants into a 4 ohm load and ours was stable into 2 or less.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.

Dont go there, so many interesting threads, My breakfast eggs and my coffee got cold, I forgot everything around me, and now I will have dig out my math books to re freshen what I have forgotten.
Thank you Geoff, you just gave me homework for God knows how many hours
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
This is excellent, Geoff. One topic that I would really like to hear about from you as the Tonemeister is a discussion of subwoofers. There seems to be quite a lot of confusion as to how to use 2 subwoofers. For example: What is the correct placement for dual subwoofers? Left/Right? Front/Rear? Can we really benefit from 2 subwoofers when the human ear cannot discern from where the sound comes? Are the BeoSystem 3 and BeoSystem 4 ready for separate dual subwoofer channels or are both subwoofers really just limited to using the same channel (even though there is no current content available to use two separate subwoofer channels). What are your thoughts on mixing different subwoofers in a dual subwoofer setting? E.g., a BeoLab 2 used in conjunction with a BeoLab 11. Finally, could there be the ability to setup a B&O system to use a Beolab 2 or Beolab 19 when watching the tv but then switching to a BeoLab 11 when listening to music?
beojeff:Finally, could there be the ability to setup a B&O system to use a Beolab 2 or Beolab 19 when watching the tv but then switching to a BeoLab 11 when listening to music?
This is possible if you have a BeoPlay 1, BeoVision 11 or BeoSystem 4. You just need to set up different Speaker Groups to suit your needs - one Speaker Group with a BeoLab 2 (or 19) and another with a BeoLab 11. You will have to switch between these Speaker Modes manually - you can't assign a Speaker Group as a default for a given input. However, this is relative easy if you add the SPEAKER option to the LIST function on the Beo4. Then you just need to LIST-SPEAKER-number to select your Speaker Mode.
For those of you that don't know, you can also use the LIST-SOUND-number to select a Sound Mode as well.
PS Thanks for all the great ideas! I've added them to the to-do list.
