Hello all, and thanks a lot for this wonderfull forum.
I have a problem with a very shy Beosystem 2500 I bought : although I can hear the tape, the CD and the radio through earphones, the volume is so low, as if the beosystem is whispering. I can hardly hear the music.
I followed the advice I found on the forum to press sound-0-store or sound-1-store, the indicatior led flashes but nothing else happens.
Using the remote control, or the panel buttons, can't make the volume change. Also I have no indication on the display that the volume is changing, and the mute botton does nothing at all.
I bought the beosystem from Ebay, and the seller says that it was working. I don't know if anything happened during it's courier trip from UK to Greece, but it arrived to me in good condition.
Any help or guidance will be highly aprreciated. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to Beoworld.
have you any powerlink speakers connected to the Beosystem 2500? Do you have any powerlink speakers (e.g. Beolab 2500) to connect to this or did the Beosystem 2500 come as a stand alone unit?Which remote are you using? Which headphones are you using?
Dave.
Thanks Dave for the welcoming message (and the prompt reply).
The system came with 2 beolab 2500. The seller sayed that only the one was working. I checked them with the Beosystem 2500 and nothing. I checked them also with a Beocenter 9500 I have (I have to admit it, I have the B&O virus too) but again no sound. I checked the cables of the beolab, but they are OK.
The remote is the beolink 1000. It was not working, but after cleaning it, it is now ok (works with my beocenter 9500). I though that maybe an interfearance with the Beocenter 9500 and the Beosystem 2500, so I unplugged the Beocenter, but still no luck.
The headphones are just normal headphones used with an mp3 player and my laptop.
Thanks for your time.
I'd contact the seller and say that it's not as described then send it back. Claim on Paypal (assuming you paid that way).
Have you tried the 'reset' button which will reset the preset sound levels?
What happens when you press the 'sound' button? Do you see anything in the display i.e. the cue of which sound you want to change? Does the display work with any source - radio, CD, tape?
Do you have the user or set-up manuals? These are here on Beoworld for Silver and Gold members.
Did you connect everything BEFORE you plugged it into the mains as suggested in the set-up manual? If not, try switching off at the lains, disconnect everything, put it all together again and then connect the mains. You should have a red standbye light for each item (except the known broken Beolab 2500).
'Sound, 1, Store' should reset factory set-up.
Good luck.
Dave,
as I sayed, I am in Greece. Sending it back to the seller in UK will cost a bit more that the refund I will get from the seller (it is crazy, but posting something from Greece to UK is 3 times more expensive than posting from UK to Greece). So returning it to the seller will make loose money. Even claiming on Ebay is useless - they will refund but only AFTER you return the item to the seller.
I payed 130 pounds to the seller and 60 pounds for the courier to Greece. If I will have to return it, I will pay 200 pounds for courier. I will get back my 130, but I would have payed 260 pounds... that is a 130 pounds loss!!!
The display works with anything else than sound and volume. If I press CD, the the display says CD and the number of the song. When I press Radio, it shows the frequency. But when I press the arrows to change volume, the red led flashes - but nothing else. That is also the case with the sound button. Pressing it will display nothing and do nothing, only the red led flashes.
I connected everything again and again in all possible ways. I found the set-up-manuals and readed them, but no luck. I only had red lights in the System and the working speaker - but no sound.
Sound 1 store does noting - the standby led in not blinking. Also pressing the mute button, the low volume sound can be still heard. Is there a mute relay that has stuck???
What a shame. Maybe I have some spare PCB's left if you're looking for any (for free).

Thanks a lot Leslie for you kind offer, but I am not sure where the problem might be. I tried to open the Beosystem, to see if there is a cable out of its connector (or something similar that may happened during courier transportation), but it is a rather complicated system and not service friendly, as older B&O's are. It will be nice if we can pinpoint the error.
Anyway, Leslie, if you will ever be in northen Greece, ouzos are on me
Well, next weekend maybe, from Sofia to Thessaloniki.
If you could pick me up at the border...
npac:I payed 130 pounds
Fortunately there are very helpful people here.
4 beolab 5, beolab 9, beolab 10, beolab 5000, beolab 8000 mk2, beolab 6002, beolab 3500, beovision 7 55 mk2, 2 beovision 11 46 mk4, beotime, beosound ouverture, beosound essence, beoplay A8, beomaster 900 RG de luxe and the collection continues...
I think he just bought the CD player and not the Beolabs. Quite confusing because it says Beosystem on the front panel

Your eyes, Leslie, your eyes !
Leslie, there is a big possibility that I will be in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria next weekend, so not just the border, but half way to Sofia :-)
Shoot, you're right! You know I had (and maybe still) problems with my eyes. Hope that's a good excuse
If that's the case he certainly had a good bargain when it came with the Beolab 2500's. Now I don't feel sorry with "npac"
Leslie:Now I don't feel sorry with "npac"
I still think he is a lucky guy ;
- a whole beosystem 2500 for 130 pounds
- an english seller who accepts to send abroad
What a lucky man !
Olvisab, yes it was rather cheap, I know, but this is the beauty of Ebay. Building my B&O collection I was rather lucky with a lot of stuff. I bought a beocord 2000 for 1 pound and a beogram 1900 for 10 pounds !!!
In the case of the Beosystem 2500, the seller sayed it worked fine. When I asked him, he replyed :
"hello, yes it was all working fine,cd tape radio, clear sound as when it was new, remote works fine.only one speaker not working at all,but fault in speaker as reversed to other port.and fine ,just nothing from one speaker at all.im sure there will be a website somewhere for these units to offer advice info, they are very popular and ive never really heard of any problems with them. i can only assume been damaged in transit.but saying that they are really well built sturdy units.regards james"
The seller had a 100% score in Ebay, with more than 900 transactions - so I trusted him. And in my opinion the courier is to be blamed. You see, because of an error in parcel's label, the Beosystem traveled from UK to Thessaloniki Greece - but the courier wanted to be payed 250 euros (although I had already payed 60 pounds to Parcel2go). It stayed about a month in Greece (maybe for summer holidays) it returned back to the sender and traveled again back to Greece (with out extra cost). It took me something less than 2 months to get the Beosystem to my hands.
If the seller was a bad guy, he could keep the Beosystem when it returned to him - but he didn't. So I trust him. I just have to find out what's wrong.
Dear Npac,
I don't blame you neither the seller. I had a similar problem with a becenter 2500, a problem of board. i bought it for a good price (not a bargain price like you). It just travelled from UK to France.
The seller paid me half the price of repair.
Recently, I moved a pair of beolab 3 from the seller's home to mine and when I plugged them to the main, I had an orange led . Repair cost : 400 euros.
Sometimes we win, sometimes we loose.
That's the law of EBAY/SECOND HAND/LIFE....

As you might know I'm in Sofia next 2 weeks and meeting another member. Maybe you could join?
And probably visiting a friend (Spiros, old member) from Thessaloniki in the weekend.

Yes I am quite lucky when it comes to ebay. Let me give you an example. I also collect retro computers, and the last item I bought was an Acorn Archimedes from 1989. The seller sayed "Computer boots up to comand prompt but cannot get hard drive or floppy drive to work. Suspected power supply failure or similar"
When I got the computer, I was able to make it boot to its Graphic User interface, the floppy drive worked, so did the hard drive. And all these, by just pressing the DEL button, while the Archimedes was booting... How can I tell this to the seller now???
So anyone that will help me with my beosystem, will get my luck in ebay
Not sure how I can help you but if you have some technical knowhow maybe I could help you with exchanging boards

I will have to travel to Blagoevgrad and Banite to install a multimedia system to museums. I don't know if it will be ready next weakend, but if you are going to stay in boulgaria for 2 weeks, we will manage to meet.
And I know Spyros (Thessaloniki has more than 1.5 million people - but I know him - I met him in his office about a year ago, because of B&O). So we will absolutly meet. And tommorow I will distill my own tsipouro (an other kind of spirit-similar to ouzo) so, drinks on me!

actually I am en electrical engineer, but I am specializing in multimedia software, so I am more software than hardware oriented. Anyway I thing that I will be able to follow instructions. Thanks pal.
Ok, let's PM from now on regarding my Bulgaria/Greece visit.

Nice to see another B&O user with a collection of Acorn/ RISC OS machines. I'm currently using a Kinetic RISC PC Running RISC OS 6 :-) I've had many Acorns in the past inc. an A3010, A4000, A5000, RISC PC 600, StrongARM RISC PC and Iyonix. They are wonderful machines if you can accept a few limitations when it comes to web browsing and video playback. Although with RISC OS Open and the RasberryPi and Beagleboard etc who knows what the future holds....
Lee
Lee,
Acorns are wonderfull machines and I think that the world would be a better place with risk os, rather than with windows (sorry Bill). I thing of making a rasbery pc for running risk os. But regarding computers, i mostly collect old macs and my beloved 8 bit Ataris. Some say that the design of atari 800XL resamples the design of beomaster 1900...
I've just checked one of mine, and found that a minor click can be heard from the Beosystem 2500 if the "mute" button is pressed - do You hear this sound if You press the mute button? If not, then that's the problem, the relay does not work (can be a real shipping problem) and therefore is the Beosystem in forced muted stage.
I also suggest to check the panel volume buttons - DOES the volume screen changes? If not, then there is some problem with the panel, maybe a cable is disconnected, wrongly connected after the shipping.
And mostly - do You hear ANY minor difference in the headphones when You change the volume or just the very same low level noisy sound?
Thanks for your input AT and for your time. I can't hear a slight click on my beomaster when I press mute. The red led in blinking, so the buttons are wolking, but no click sound and no indication on display (I don't know if yours display "MUTE" when you click the mute button).
But are you sure the the click is from the beosystem and not the beolabs? The beolabs have relays, as I have seen when I opened mine. Are your beolabs close to beosystem, so the "click" you hear comes from them? Can you try to disconnect the Beolabs and try again to hear the click sound from the mute relay? This test can be very helpfull.
When I press the volume buttons on the panel, the red light flashes - but that's all. Nothing changes in the display - the display works, displayes CD & track, or Radio and frequency, and everything else, exept from volume information. And the whispering sound is not changing not even slightly.
"But are you sure the the click is from the beosystem and not the beolabs?"You are right, mine is on the wall, and it just sounds as the Becenter clicks, but the sound comes from the Beolabs. Sorry."The red led in blinking, so the buttons are wolking, but no click sound and no indication on display (I don't know if yours display "MUTE" when you click the mute button)."No, there is no "mute" message, however the volume level is displayed as "Vol: __" and after the next press of the "mute" button the display changes back to the actual volume, ie. "Vol: 42". "Nothing changes in the display - the display works, displayes CD & track, or Radio and frequency, and everything else, exept from volume information. And the whispering sound is not changing not even slightly."I have a real-real bad feeling.
Maybe You have just received an MPAV9000 against to a Beocenter 2500.
Please refer to this article:http://beocentral.com/masterpanelav9000As this is the only thing I can imagine, how can it be, that there is absolutely no volume control on a Beocenter 2500 look a like B&O system - except if there is a total strange panel failure.I tried a lot to simulate Your situation, even transferred the sound from the Beocenter to a non existing output (A/V function). In this case the noisy sound appeared, however it changes the level AND in the meantime the display shows the actual volume. And if I press the source again, this feature is cancelling. Also, if I know well, the Beocenter 2500 was never equipped with a Masterlink, so I think it's not possible to transfer the volume control forcefully to a different B&O system.I think, You should check what You have just received, as it's possible that not even the seller recognised, that this system is not a BC2500 but an MPAV9000, mostly if it was removed from an AV9000 system, where it was really worked fine.
And, just for fun: If I know well, as an MPAV9000 is not able to control the Beolabs, so it's possible that both Beolabs are working fine, and these are simply unuseable with this system. So maybe You received a wrong Beocenter but perfect Beolabs...
I hope, this helps You, or at least we can be sure that we talk about a Beocenter 2500.
Dear AT. Greatings to Budapest.
Thanks a lot for your time and consern. Your MPVA9000 theory is interesting - however I think it is wrong. OK the front panel has a "BEOSYSTEM 2500" label, and so says the little paper with the serial number on the back. OK, these can be fake, but MPVA9000 has a masterlink connector and not powerlinks for connecting the beolabs. In my case, the B&O has powerlinks and does not has masterlink - so it can't be MPVA9000.
Your theory may be partialy true in the case that the beosystem broke and the person that serviced it used the microprocessor board of a MPVA9000. The system partialy worked so the owner tried to sell it through ebay.
But this asumes that the seller is a big lier. He was even asking for byuers to pick it up from his home, after checking it - this is not something that a cheater would do.
So I thing that we still have a Beosystem 2500.
Thank You for the kind wishes :)
I don't intend to suggest that the seller is a liar.
I had just an idea why the volume control (and IMHO the "Sound" button) doesn't work at all on Your system as it's a very unusual problem, I never heard that a Beocenter doesn't show the Volume options on the display but everything else is working fine.
The only thing I ever seen with a Beocenter - which can be a clue for this case - is the RDS panel. As You might know, the installation of this board is very easy, You need to connect the RDS panel's regular cables, but no additional setting is required, the Beocenter detects it, and the RDS names are just appearing on the display if You press the "Radio" button for three times.
For this reason - I think - the "motherboard" looks for the built in circuits (fe: "Am I 2300? Am I 2500? Am I MPAV?), and it will use the existing ones, and denies the missing/not answering ones, so if the "motherboard" is not able to communicate with the volume control circuits, it will deny all the options for the volume control. I'm NOT familiar with these circuits, but it's possible that the problem is, that a connection is broken, or a cable connection was damaged, or lost the connection.
I think it worth a look inside the Beocenter is all connectors perfectly connected.
Unfortunately, I have no more idea on this case :(
Strange things can happen when the 2 bottom boards are disconnected .
By pressing to hard on 1 side of the bottom, it's possible to disconnect 1 flatcable (powersupply) from one board to the other.
2 small flatcables are going from the transformer board to the next board. Make sure these are fitted properly.
The only way to inspect is to unscrew the 2 bottom screws from the transformer and the four screws from the backchassis.
Of course the back itself has to be taken away before you can do this.
I've had this once and even option settting wasn't possible, but the mirror doors worked well.
