Can anyone fill me in on the differences between the original s30 (type 6301) and the later (type 6317)
There is a pair of type 6317 on ebay, but I have heard they are inferior to type 6301. True or false?
They are substantially different speakers.Type 6301 is the smaller one but, also in my opinion, the most balanced and well-sounding of the two.Where type 6317 has a tendency to sound a bit "hard-pushed", cold or "striving", type 6301 sounds moreuntroubled and pleasantly warm. Also the bass response, although never boomy or heavy from any of these small cabinets, seems to be better despitethe smaller woofer. Actually, I think the japanese (no offense intended) woofer in type 6317 is the main cause forthe generally low rating. The Beovox S35-2 or S40 are far better speakers, basically using the same cabinet etc. but witha Philips woofer and they are some of the best sounding two-way speakers I've ever heard.
If used together with a subwoofer, however, the 6317 may take a little medal since it actually has a very goodhigh- and midrange.
Sound is all a matter of taste and others may disagree.
