And still everybody seems to recommend the MK III. The displays of the II s match better with the displays of Beolab 3000 and Beolab 5000.

I'm pretty sure that there are different versions of the green displays. I have three pairs of Penta MK 3 and one is a later version which has a different lettering than the earlier versions that are depicted for example here http://beophile.com/?page_id=868 . Still, there only seems to be one Bang and Olufsen replacement part (one type number).

It exists two version of the MKIII display. The look slightly different but are from a tech. point identical.

That's what I've recognized. The later ones are a little smaller, less distance between the dots and also brighter. Not sure which one I prefer... Generally, I like green better than orange, but the MK 2 has slightly more information on it and does adapt to the strength of light surrounding it. Also looks very nice. However, the original yellow covers really do look kind of odd.

hmmmmm I like the MKIII's but they do not match the display on my 7000 so I'm in a quandary ......

we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.

I've always thought that II s and III s are identical other than the displays? Is there any difference between early and late versions of Penta MK III s other than the displays?

On paper and when new there probably was no difference apart from more modern components.

But allowing time to take its toll I felt when I backed to backed them the III's sounded better and this could be down to a myriad of reasons.

If they sound different its most certainly due to aging filter components and/or mid-range foam rot.

The Pentas seem to be quite prone to aging of components. Probably more so than let's say the 8000s.

Well the BL8000 is a full active design, meaning filters are on the signal side rather than the amplified side. It might be that aging is slower but they will be much harder to refurbish due to the more complex design, smd components & more integrated (unrepairable solutions). Speaker drivers are also aging, hardened and cracked surronds. Pentas are more easy to maintain & refurb (in my view).Smile

Aslo; BL8000 cannot compete with Penta soundwise.

Do the Penta 2s have a dimming function integrated in their displays? Beocentral says yes, but somewhere in the forum it was reported no...

Thanks Bo!

Is it the same mechanism as in the Beolab 5000?

What happens to aging display covers of the Penta 2s? I've heard somewhere that they are prone to age - more so than the later display covers of the Penta IIIs.

Cheers,

Kai

Not exactly the same. The display itself is identical but the controller board is different.

It seems to be that the plastic quality chosen for the Penta2 becomes more fragile with age than both Penta1 & 3.

Are you sure that the displays themselves are the same as those in the Beolab 5000? They look entirely different to me now that I've seen them both side by side.

Also: is the perspex covering the bottom plate the same for Penta 2s and Penta 3s?

Thanks Bo!

Well, at least the beolab 3000, I'm sure of.

Thanks Bo. Strange that they still look so different - at least to me. Still don't know how that dimming mechanism is supposed to work. I really love my newly acquired Pentas MK 2. Went almost 700 kilometers one way to get them. Was well worth the effort. Out of the four Penta pairs that I've owned this is the one that I like the most. Sounds right, looks great and displays are nicer than the early MK 3 ones from my point of view (maybe even nicer than the late MK 3 ones).

Cheers,

Kai
