Hi, does anybody know what this problem could be that I have with my beolab 8000's? They are about 11 years old and haven't  been thrashed as such, but for some reason all of a sudden, there seems to be a rattling/vibration noise coming out of the powerlink and power port at the rear of one of the speakers.

It only happens when bass is getting played through them.

Many thanks

Carl

The amplifier occupies the lower part of the BL8000 casing whilst the drivers themselves are mounted higher up, so it sounds more like something is loose than a problem with the drivers themselves.

Before starting to remove the frets to investigate further it is probably worth checking the simple stuff first if you have not already done so:-

- Is the vibration the same regardless of whether the connection plate is open or latched closed?

- Is there any movement between the speaker base and the floor (the 4 rubber feet on the underside of the base can be screwed in/out to level the base)

- Has the nut that secures the main body of the speaker to the base come loose? (carefully lay the speaker down on something soft to access the nut underneath and don't over-tighten this as there is a risk of deforming the conical part of the speaker if you do so, but make sure it has not come loose)

Apologies if you've already checked the more obvious stuff but best to start simple and work on from there.

Report back once you've checked the above and we'll go from there - do you know how to remove the frets? I'll talk you through it if you haven't done it before as it is easy to break the clips if you are not careful.

Kind Regards,

Martin

Hello!

My speakers (BL 8000 MkII) make the same vibrating noise playing bass; I can stop the noise pushing/tightening the threat in front of the bass reflex tube at the top of the speaker.

I have no idea to solve this problem - maybe you?

best regard

Hi Martin,

Many thanks for getting back to me, I have checked all the things that you pointed out to me and all is fine here, I have checked the speakers and none of them are blown either. It sounds as if something is vibrating but only when bass is getting played loud.

This is only happening in one speaker.

Kind regards

Hi Carl,

When you say you have checked the speakers do you mean you have already removed the frets or just by listening to each driver through the speaker cloth? Given the area you say the sound is coming from I don't think that it is driver related, but do think tracing the source of the vibration will now require further disassembly. Obviously step one of this process is removing the frets which is easy enough to do once you've done it before, but also very easy to break the clips when you can't see how they are attached.

It sounds from your description like something has worked loose and when the sound level is sufficient it is causing a vibration but obviously this is very difficult to confirm without being able to hear the noise myself.

It would be worth your while becoming a silver or gold member in order to download the service manual if you don't already have this - it has a very useful exploded diagram of all the parts of the BL8000.

Most of the screws are torx (star) head so you'll need a suitable screwdriver and/or ratchet to remove these.

I usually find it easiest to remove the base from the BL8000 to make it easier to handle and then lay it on a duvet to work on as this helps prevent any scratches.

If you decide to tackle this yourself then keep us updated and don't hesitate to ask further questions.

Kind Regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

I have removed the frets and the speakers have not blown for sure as I can still here the quality sound coming through both drivers, it's as if something is vibrating inside but only when bass is pushed through the speaker at quite a high volume.

I think I will get B&O to take a look at them for me.

Thank you very much for your help.

Kind regards

Hi Carl,

Sounds like a plan, please do come back and let us know the outcome once they've been looked at as it may help others in the future.

Hope you get this sorted.

Kind Regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

As soon as I find out what it is I will let you know, when you are used to listening to the pure quality sound that comes out of these speakers, if something isn't quite right, it doesn't take long to hear it.

I will be in touch once B&O have taken a look.

Thanks again for your help.

Kind regards

Hi Carl,

Did you manage to get the speaker fixed? What was your solution as I have exactly the same issue with my Beolab 18.

Thanks

Tristan
