Hi Guys,
I have a NAS full of music, videos, series and photos. I am now streaming all these through a Lacinema Black Max media player using DLNA. Being a Beofan, I was looking for a B&O alternative, but I cannot find it:
- Beomedia does not seem to play large video files and is not suppose to (and of course everything has to be put on the machine itself)
- HDR1/2 has no option to put files on it from the computer
So, I need to buy raspberry pi with b&o compatible IR eye, any other media player with a IR control via Beovision, or a Beovision 11 with DLNA included. Do I miss anything?
Anyone want's to share their setup? O and PS: I do not want to leave my computer on (crazy apple TV), or convert every AVI clip that come from my camera into another specific format to be able to play it.
Cheers!
Beosound 5 Encore + Beosystem 5500 + S45.2; BV7-40 MKV + BL7.1 + BL14.4+ AppleTV4; various link rooms with MCL2 A or MCL2 A/V + RL60.2 / CX100 / CX50 & Cona / IWS2000; BG4000; Beosystem 1200 + BV1600.
I don't know if the Lacie Max can be PUC controlled, but - if yes, then just connect this to a/your BV.
That will do the trick.
No need for a computer, if the files are on the Max/NAS.
Oh and P.S. What does "leave my computer on (crazy apple tv)" mean
MM
There is a tv - and there is a BV
Millemissen: Oh and P.S. What does "leave my computer on (crazy apple tv)" mean
If you want stream video content through your apple TV it needs to get it from iTunes, running on your computer. So if I want to leave my laptop back at the office, it won't work. Or only with hired/purchased content. Plus it requires very specific formats and codecs. Hence: crazy.
There was already some info about the Rapberry Pi. With an ir attached and using the windows stb on the puc list, it should work.
You don't need a special B&O infrared receiver if you use of the PUC or STB from the Beovision.
I did some research and trials with different (media/XMBC)images, but it didn't work flawless. I was btw very slow...
I have the 2nd generation Raspberry Pi with 512MB memory.

Of cource I know that!
But why are you bringing the ATV into the game?
As I understand your post, you have all you need - just connect the Lacie-player to the BV, and start playing as you do now.
If there is a PUC that can be used, it is fine - makes it easier to navigate.

yeah I actually want to replace the Lacie with a B&O product since Lacie has some issues :(. And ATV is a combination with B&O that I see a lot, also in stores, so that is why.
But maybe I need to settle for the PUC solution. Cheers.

Nothing beats the GUI of XBMC.
Did you check the Intel NUC I3 Haswell running openelec as OS. Just have it running for a few days now, but it looks very good. Actually, it has so much horsepower, you can easily get away with the cheaper Celeron version. There is also some info in the thread where Kimhav posted some issues with EDID, but that only applies to Windows. He has the same player.
May a WD TV Live HD Player could work for you?
I believe there was a PUC entry for it, too.

The only real "B&O alternative" is the 'HomeMedia' (the internal player of the V1/BV11...) of the newer BV's.
If this will play ALL of your files, is hard to say without knowing which files/filetypes you have on your NAS.
The suggested WD Live player is very common and there is a PUC for it.
Before the arrival of the internal BV-player, the TVix box was often used by B&O in their setups.
There are lots of possible player solutions out there.
If they will be better than your Lacie, is hard tell.
You will have to do some experimenting - I guess!
To your question about 'sharing our setups', all I can say is:
I gave up using 'mediaplayers' some time ago - I have spend far too much time ripping, downloading, converting, organizing, testing DLNA-servers and, and...
Most of my 'older files' were of bad quality (for 2014-standards) - avi-files and MP3-files....
I now use plain Bluray-discs (and the DVD's that I already have) - and of course a good Bluray-player.
For my (CD to FLAC) ripped music I use a Squeezebox, which is connected to my Playmaker/BeoMaster-combo controlled by the SqueezePad iPad-app.....
...and - more and more often - services like Spotify and WiMP HiFi via AirPay/Playmaker.
Nowadays I prefer viewing/listening to the 'files' rather than fiddling around with hardware/software and bad implemented DLNA-solutions.
That's just me - others might have a different approach to this.
By the way - I don't think the ATV is 'crazy'.
It is perfect for easy AirPlaying Youtube-videos, video/audio content from homepages, netradio etc from an iPad.
You don't need to look at the ATV as a 'media player' - unless you want to.
thanks for sharing MM, I will need to do some research ;-)
I am the voice crying out into the wilderness, but I still see the OPPO 103 as the best choice for integrating external sources easily and competently into a BeoVision 11. It decodes the the high definition Dolby and DTS into PCM, which is what you want. You can run your NAS into it. It has the best integrated PUC I have seen for a 3rd party device. It is a reference-level product, has an incredible interface, 2 HDMI inputs and outputs, and controllable by iDevices. $500 US.
I have read all the postings about audio and video file playback and what the B&O will and won't do. This machine answers pretty much all of them in 1 box. BTW, even Kaleidescape requires an external processor for high definition audio, so it's not just B&O who are hesitant to offer that for digital copies of BluRay, etc. Maybe because it violates the BluRay standard?

Nice product, it's a shame it does not come with a DVD-2 jacket.
Why are you crying in the wilderness? Not many fans?

Haha. Just a wonderful product. What is a DVD2 jacket?
For $499,- you have a player for the US market. Limited use in Europe. In Europe they are a lot more expensive. And still it's not a full-featured mediaplayer like a Dune or something equal.. Nice player though if you play lots of br-disks.

I mean the HDR2 / DVD2 casing, because I like the aesthetics of those products more.
@symnes
The OPPO103 is my choice 'per se' - the perfect Bluray player, that has a nice network section too
But the question from the op was: 'a B&O-alternative'!
And I just wanted to say, that MJBeo already has what he needs - at least for a start
I don't think that B&O are hesitant - they do support playing 'digital copies of DVD's'.
To me it seems more like they did not realize what an internal media player ('Homemedia' of the V1/BV11/12..) must be able to do nowadays.
To me it doesn't matter (as stated above) - but if they want to have the internal media player as part of the BV's, they must do it right!!!
@MJBeo
The OPPO(103) has many fans!
symnes is just one of many 'voices crying out.....'
What is a 'DVD-2 jacket, please?
---- oh, I see that the question already was answered.
I think the OPPO looks really nice, but you can hide it if it is PUC controlled.
If you 'only' use it as media player you don't have to see it at all.
BUT, you should - at least once - try playing a good CD on it

I like that product, but it doesn't decode hidef DTS and Dolby. A lot less expensive in turn.
The point to this is let the media providers do the conversion because you can't please everybody, or hardly anybody.

The reason I would call it a B&O alternative is because you could use the OPPO for media, any old tv using the OPPO scaler, and a BeoLab 14 kit for audio; Whole kit for a solid price, and upgradable.

I do follow you - but not with the 'any old tv'.
I definitely would not give up my BV's.
The BL14 set is good for video sources, but for listening to music in a 2.1 option not my cup of tea.
@ DoubleU and symnes
'For $499,- you have a player for the US market....' - 'but it doesn't decode hide DTS and Dolby'
Which player is meant, please?
The OPPO103?
499 is half of what you pay in Denmark and Germany
The OPPO does decode the HD sound formats!
Dune is US $250 ish. Doesn't decode HD DTS and Dolby, but that will surely change.
Well!
OPPO is the 499 Dollar
and
Dune is the 'not decoding'
I see.
Again, you don’t want to use a US-version in Europe, so the $499,- is actually 699 Euro. Almost double the price! The Darbee version will take quality a step further but has his price.
The Oppo excels in playing BluRay-discs, not as a streaming mediaplayer. It’s nice to have good video-processing, but if half of the formats are not supported…
Dune HD Base 3D will decode HD-audio btw..
The OPPO is what I called 'a good bluray player' in one of my posts above.
@ DoubleU, "The Oppo excels in playing BluRay-discs, not as a streaming mediaplayer. It’s nice to have good video-processing, but if half of the formats are not supported…"
What do you mean by not as a streaming mediaplayer? And which formats are not supported? Everything I have experienced is first class, and I found the media player really nice when managed by the app.
These differences would be interesting to understand. All I ever knew was region coding on DVD and BluRay.
Does your Oppo support *.iso files? Or Video_TS and BDMV directory structures?
DoubleU: Does your Oppo support *.iso files? Or Video_TS and BDMV directory structures?
Well, you have me there, if that's the difference in a classic media server to which you are referring. But they aren't media files for playback, are they?
Yes, they are. Oppo was capable to do so too, but they updated the firmware last year only to please the Blu Ray Alliance. If you don’t, like Sigma Designs did, you loose your license to manufacture BR-players.
Work-around is of course to convert to mkv, but that’s one step extra.
Kaleidascape plays BRD .iso - as far as I know.
But they don't make BRPlayers - so no problem?
If so - B&O could also support BRP .iso (and the HD sound formats)?
They don't make BRP's either.
Just asking - because I am curious.
I don't really care - I prefer a disc in my BRP.
As far as I know Kaleidescape rips the BRD, but in order to play, it needs the physical disc to be present. True, the GUI is fast and looks very slick, but with a HTCP running XBMC you will experience the same.
The firmware update Oppo had to do last year to disable ISO playback, is a major downgrade.

Good insight.
That's correct about the BR disc in place. but Kaleidescape still requires external processing to decode HD Audio. This thread suggests you can't have it all.
I agree! It boggles the mind that B&O did not strike a deal with Oppo to have a B&O version encased in brushed aluminum. It would have looked perfect stacked on top of a BeoSystem 3.
