I purchased BS 5 / BM 5 in Feb 2009.

First motherboard replaced May 2009, second one in Aug 2010 - both exchanged in warranty. Not one single issue since then.

Update process so far always flawless.

System used up to 2 hours a day, listen mostly in MOTS. I have set up 4 different favorite lists with about 10 songs each. Normally I select one of these 40 songs (all with different flavor) and go into MOTS.

The sound as delivered to BL1/BL2 or BL 8000 is very nice. Most of the files are WMA lossless or MP3 320kbit.

N.Radio works well, radio stations made improvements in streaming rate over the last 5 years.

The system is controlled via Beo 6 (not very strong WLAN antenna) or with various Beo 4s. Sound is distributed into 4 rooms via ML. BS 3200 is master, BS 5 slave. Operation via N.Music or N.Radio is simple and straightforward.

 *******

Although there was some early pain, I appreciate the system, its "electronic tactility", MOTS capability and a nice sound. I appreciate the fact that the system has gained a lot of capability over the period I am describing, therefore, keeping its value. I hope B&O continues to maintain it and show care for the system and its ownerbase...The only thing I am thinking about now is adding CD Ripper to have CD capability in one unit.

Repurchase and recommendation ? Any time YES.

The system stopped working. Apparently there was a weak component, as far as I understand, B&O applied warranty/policy and fixed the problem with better boards.

I'm very happy with mine too.

When i saw it, i knew it was the music system i've looking for to replace my BS9000.

The minimalist design, the link between mechanical elements and software, the graphic user interface,... Embarrassed

I purchased mine in 2009.

The motherboard has been quickly replaced, exchanged in warranty.

No problem since then.

Like Pf85, i love the sound, features like MOTS, updates like Spotify, the possibility to integrate a CD ripping device and to get a 2-ways remote (Beo6),...

I think it's the perfect system for someone who want to enter the digital world and keep the B&O magic touch with a splendid object.

Bravo B&O !

Recommendation ? YES ! Yes - thumbs up

I am very happy with mine also. I hade one of the first in sweden and without any big problems since then. One thing is that the Beo6 is slow showing the CD covers but that isn´t so important.

The download of Spotify was a good move from B&O.

Last month I also updated the software in my BV10-46 and after that I think the sound is even better, but it could just be a dream...

Current; Beosound 2, BV Horizon 48,  2*BL3, BL11, Beolit 12, Beolit 15, Beoplay P6, Beoplay A9, Beoplay H9i

Earlier; BV 10-46, 2*BL3, BM5/BS5, BS9000, BL8000, BV7-32, MX7000, Beoport, Beocord 8000, MX4002, BL2000, Beocom1, Beotalk1200

I had mine for several years also, and I had the motherboard changed and also the harddrive (now I have 1 TB). Both under warranty.

We are really happy with our BS5, everything works perfect, we never had any breakdowns. We also use the BV7 connection to have our pictures shown.

The BS5 is AM in our setup and I have a set of BL3 connected.

All I could wish for is a Beoremote App to navigate thru N.MUSIC (without the MLGW) and also the option to have Spotify Connect.

Very pleased with mine and its on ml round the house and two tv's as well. wonder what the next up grade is or the replacement for the 5?

I'd love B&O to do some sort of video storage/server for dvd or bluray so you can have moves in any room but alass don't think that will very happen Sad

You mean a system like Kaleidescape? Don’t you think it’s too late to enter that market? Tv’s these days are already so capable to act standalone in combination with a decent NAS, hence the reason why ML is slowly fading away. B&O doesn’t even have it’s own bluray-player.

But to stay on topic, I liked Steph’s reply:

So true! The only upgrade B&O should do is reducing the size of the BeoMaster5, get rid of the Windows XP software and replace it with a faster OS. Mini-PC’s are already so small these days with way better specifications we had in 2009.

Like Bv7Mk3, i would have liked to see B&O in the past years develop a system like Kaleidescape.

True B&O philisophy : a really simple video system for people who doesn't like spend hours in front of a computer to rip DVD and Blu-Rays, and an easy access to the medias.

But i think it's because of majors rights for movies, copyrights,... And now, with streaming, it's too late.

For the BeoSound 5, i'm agree with DoubleU, a small BeoMaster5 with one fast flash memory for the system (linux, like the Encore ?) and a big classic hard drive for the storage of music would be great !

Someone mentioned the request for support of 24/192 FLAC.

But in general, I think the product has grown within B&O (it is the only music system right now anyway), and with the price reduction some time ago, I think it is a good product that deliver high end quality, which I think high end speakers require. And it has shown, that B&O can keep a product updated using SW only. Nice and very good customer service!

I hope for a little more development, before a new music system comes.

Does anyone know how the product sells?

Not sure about numbers but I don't think too many.

In my view B&O needs to be more forthcoming on what plans it has with BS5/BM5 to give trust and confidence to future buyers.  Also the current ownerbase which is known to B&O via the registration process is undercommunicated to. Have we ever seen a short questionnaire on what next update the ownerbase would like ?

thank you all for your good reviews on the Beosound 5 as I have been toying with the idea of getting this unit.

it would be really good to see other Beoworlders "real life experience" in-depth reviews on other B&O products Idea

we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.

Did you mean five years of crap audio devices? ..

As I see on most of the Beosound 5's, Behind the glass plate is after a few times dust that you can't remove without make the device open. What is this for crap ? You pay a lot and I see only complaints with the motherbord and things like above with the glass plate.

But the design is 100% good ! It looks modern and it is an easy device to use ;) (but the price for this quality... )

Salvador, your tagline reveals your thinking.

I have respect for a company that deals with early teethingproblems like B&O did with motherboards some years ago. On top of that, in today's electronic world where you buy directly for the trashcan a few months down the road, five years with a product and constant updates to keep it fresh is quite an achievement. Besides, I have not encountered dust under the glass.

We bought ours two years ago together with a beolab 9 pair to pilot all the link rooms in our house.

I'm not as positive as other here, I'm sorry. The sound quality of the speakers is extremely well, but the usability of the beosound 5 is below par. I admit it looks good, but at +-5000 euro for a pc running xp you would expect it to be easy/great to use.

The scroll wheel for instance has no use when you want to search for a particular song. Imagine having some classical piece called 'Op. 4 movement IV - Allegro <well known name>. Of course you only know it by the name. In itunes or similar you would just type the first few letters of this name and find it. Not here. I actually have to go into itunes on my phone or mac search, find the complete name, go back to the BS5 and find it by turning the weel endlessly. This could be easily fixed with an app of some sort which lets you build a queue or something (like the sonos app).

MOTS is a joke, it has a strong preference for some songs (no matter which song you start with) and after a while you just know what song is coming.

I tried to alleviate some of the pain buying a Beo6 hoping i could find music with that faster. I know have a very nice looking, useless, slow remote on my cupboard for the price of an iPhone.

Spotify integration is good, at least this lets you create playlists and so easy in the iphone app or on your pc and play them on the bs 5, but again there is no integration with beo6.

Growing up, I always dreamed of having a B&O system, now I regret it, I feel 'tricked'. I hoped they would bring the system to the next level through updates, but they have failed so far.

I agree about MOTS. I have had to remove certain songs from the BM5 as MOTS kept playing them. It should have been designed to limit the number of plays of a song in the various MOTS queues.Sometimes I like MOTS because it does find music you have not listened to recently, but I find the way it seems to include the same songs/artists very annoying.

BeoSound 5 plus points:

Beautiful Build quality and unsurpassed sound quality

BeoSound 5 minus points:

Horrible, confusing interface

Clumsy wiring especially with regards to auxiliary devices

I could forgive all the minus points and would adore the unit if only B&O would;

Produce a slick app to control and navigate All music sources.

Build airplay into the unit as standard.

Then the user has everything covered:)

That would be a rather different device!
