Hi Guys,

This is my first post so I'm a total noob. Go your hardest if this question has been done to death or point me in the right direction please.

All of my music is on iTunes on my Mac. All 10000 songs.

I want a pair of beolab 8000s

My question is; should I just plug in the 3.5mm jack from the airport into the 8000s and use airplay or do I need a DAC and a better interface. I also use Apple TV.

Ive also read that volume control can be a problem from iTunes.

Thanks in advance- your most humble noob

What might work is buy a b&o playmaker and connect the 8000's to that.
Than sign up for itunes match. You will than have all you music available on iphone and ipad, and you can stream the music to the playmaker from that.

Another solution is to buy a sonos:connect and connect the 8000's to that via cinch cable. That works very well, and you can control the sonos from every computer or iphone/ipad. You also have spotify, internet radio, basically every service you will need.

I see no easy way to connect the 8000s to an appletv. You can however connect them to your tv in most cases. If you like the user interface of the apple tv this might work very well.

I would not connect the 8000s directly to an airport express. Sound quality is poor. Volume control mighnt be possible. I don't know. I have connected the airport to amplifiers in the past, but never to active speakers. I don't think this is possible without extra boxes.

I have been unable to get the palymaker working without dropouts or other network connectivity issues so I have migrated to Sonos. But others are very happy with their playmakers. There's no real price difference.

Thanks Amazone

I will look into the Sonos option as a priority.

A couple of things;

what is a chinch cable?

Do I plug the 8000 into the RCA inputs on the Sonos?

thanks

With cinch I mean what you call RCA!

The sonos has the same connectors as the Beolab 8000, so you can connect them without any converter. Use the RCA out on the Sonos. On the RCA in you can connect another device, maybe your tv. That works very well and in this way you have your tv sound also available via the beolabs.

Hello,

I was in the exact same situation as you are. I first tried to connect my BL8000 directly to my macs (iMac or a Powerbook) and noticed that there sometimes was a humming noise coming from the speakers and this was probably caused by interference inside the computer (power supply etc.). I now have a Cambridge Audio DAC Magic Plus connected to my Mac (USB) and the BL 8000 connected to the DAC via RCA cables. This works very well. You will not however be able to regulate the volume with the keyboard buttons on you mac but the volume can be regulated within iTunes or directly on the DACs onboard volume control.

I control my iTunes library using my iPhone/iPod touch with the remote app which has worked flawlessly (you can regulate the volume in the remote app without any problems).

Using the DAC allows you to channel any sounds from the mac to the speaker (not only iTunes as with airplay) but also VLC, games, system sounds etc. and there are no dropouts since it is not wireless.

I would strongly support the use of Cambridge Audio DAC Magic. I've been using one for years that sits between my mac-mini running iTunes and BM-Link and a BeoPort. The quality boost is excellent because you're not relying on the D-A converter on the Mac which is okay but not up to the quality that your 8000's can handle.

Best, Rob
