It is the Anti Reflection coating that has been erased by using something abrasive to clean it. I am afraid it is not repairable , you will have to live with it or replace the front glass panel. You could pick a cheap 7-40 up from ebay!!!

Difficult to tell from the picture but at first glance it does look like something has been sprayed on. Probably reflective coating damage as JC says. Take a very careful look at it with a magnifying glass. Is it etched into the coating (now looking like plain glass) or is it on top and removable with a damp cloth?

Common mistake with these coatings is someone doing the household cleaning spotting something on the screen and then resorting to rubbing very hard when it doesn't come off..... they haven't realised that they are removing a coating and making the damaged area bigger.

It definitely looks like damage to the anti reflex coating and this is not reversible.

The cost of a new contrast screen is £810 inc VAT. I have a MKII 7-40 that has an issue with the LCD backlight so it is being stripped down for spare parts, the contrast screen will go for £400.
