Hey guys,
how many of you have B&O stuff just for collection purposes without actually using it? This leads to the question: now that we all know that it can become addictive, how much B&O do you need or do you want to own?
Greetings,
Kai
I actually sold my System 6500 and 3300, and from time to time I regret it, but I have no use for it.
The systems was replaced by BS5 and master link, and it works for me.
I still look for additional B&O..........but I don't know why :-)
Strange, isn't it? That seems to hold true for many of us. I mean, it's completely uneconomical since all the things grow old no matter whether used or not and therefore they won't get better with age. And the more you own the more you have to fix which in turn again increases costs. Costs for things you own but never use...
we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.
Do you need equally as much as you want and if not, why is it that you want more than you need?

4 beolab 5, beolab 9, beolab 10, beolab 5000, beolab 8000 mk2, beolab 6002, beolab 3500, beovision 7 55 mk2, 2 beovision 11 46 mk4, beotime, beosound ouverture, beosound essence, beoplay A8, beomaster 900 RG de luxe and the collection continues...
It depends on your wants and desires on any given time.
I'm kind of between 3 systems + some loose ends here and there. Collecting for the sake of it means nothing and I can control it very well. If I am not going to use it what is the point besides a collection is nothing but another persons space really. At some point that space needs to be cleared and the collection gets around again.
It started out with selling the '80s Beosystem 2000 in 2006 as the Beolab 8000 system seemed to interesting and I had also the Beocord 9000 allready. Then a original white Beosystem 6000 turned up and I got to have it. Totally dead but nice condition. During 2008 it was 8000 and 6000 in one room while Martin serviced most of it and getting matching Beovoxes S80's+S120 + SC60 stand.
Then it got to Beosystem 6500 based on getting an apartment and it being available for a fair price. Long story later the 6500 got sold for another 6500 which had turned up in white for a very good price. Perfect? Maybe white and it turned up without doing an active search for it!
So 6500 and 6000 is the current setups while palisander 8000 got sold but white BM8000 and serviced Beocord 9000 is waiting for serious use.
Hey,
Interesting thread! I agree with what has already been said, especially that there is no correlation between how much B&O you need (in essence nothing, it's not a life support) and how much B&O you want (which is not infinite, since there is not an infinte amount of good produced during the 80 odd years B&O have been in production). I am one of those people who collect without using, but I can always blame the fact that my humble abode is so small as to not provide sufficient space for all my items to be used. That being said, I have sold off some of my stuff (which I don't regret) in search for better models or versions.

How long is a piece of string?

Griebel : « Still have a Serenata cell phone, but I haven't use it for years. Useless but a B&O piece of collection I don't want to seperate from! »
Same than Griebel, the difference is that i have a Serene cell phone. I use the phone very rarely, but love it !

There is a tv - and there is a BV
The only B&O that's not used daily is the Beotime . I had to have one though!
Beo Century ,Beoplay V1, Beocenter 6, Ex-Beolit 12, Beotime , A8. Beolit 15 , Form 2i , Beolab 2000, Beoplay A3.Beosound 1
About half óf what I have I use very regulary. The rest of the half is there for collection the rest is work in progress renovation , I sell of quite abit of those machines that I get in nice shape. So for me it is 4 things that give me pleasure
*use
*collection
*repairment
*sell in agenda to spread B&O culture.
My re-capped M75 are my precious diamonds.
I dont need any B&O. But I love collecting, repairing and using vintage B&O, I started out with 70th model, went into the 80th, now I am into 60th.
I always have at least one BM playing every day, always two BG playing 2/3 times a week, and always 3 BMs,BGs and diff. speakers ready to play, my biggest problem is my lovely FS, who just dont under stand the need of more than one set in the same room. I would like to have a museum like Steffen in DK, who rebuild his attic. And just a small dungeon, just like Martin, but not as big. I have a two story house, flat roof, I could tel the FS that we need a party room, and build it on the roof, and then use it for combined B&O show off, party and listening room.
I dont NEED B&O, but I dont want to live without it
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
First I will admit I am a designer and what things look like and design are important to me. But I think with B & O equipment that what it looks like is important to others on this forum as well. How hard is it to let go of something that you have no aesthetic connection to, something that does not give you pleasure for what it looks like even if something else can perform equally well or even better. Despite all the reviews I read about B & O being more expensive and having lower performance specifications than some other really ordinarily designed component, I would go for the B & O. equipment. What something sounds like seems to be a very subjective way of making decisions about what equipment to buy to me from what I have read about blind testing, so I will go on what just visually makes me happy to own. Many designs of B & O are in the Museum of Modern Art in New York for a reason, they are recognized as exemplifying what can be seen as the pinnacle of design, and often these components do not get the performance credit they deserve. And in the end even if you don't use them and they don't even work they are a work of art.

The bad part of owning stuff is that it also owns you. With that in mind I've come to realize that I only need very little. Unlike most people I know I invest in quality rather than quantity. For me a product has to be well designed and engineered. I like quality materials and ease of operation too. So when it comes to audio equipment and tv, B&O is the obvious and only choice for me.
The only exception to this owning less lifestyle is that I own 4 music systems. My Beosystem 7000 and Beosound Century are in storage, my Beocenter 9300 sits on my desk but is not connected to anything, the only sound system that get's used is the the Beosystem 2300 in the bedroom as an alarm clock. There is no sound system in the living room anymore. For some reason my co-workers like to listen to music while they are working, leaving me with no desire to listen to radio or music anymore when I have time off.
There is also a Beolink 7000 which is more of a display piece, but it gets it's occasional use for programming the Beosystem 2300, maybe once or twice a year. In all other cases I use a Beo4 for convenience.
I don't care much about television. Only few shows are worth watching and my old MX7000 gets only few hours use in the weekend.
So how much B&O do I need? very little to be honest. If i would start from scratch now I'd probably would like a simple all in one solution in the living room, much like a modern day Beocenter 1 with a remote, and maybe a portable speaker with built in alarm clock that would not need an Iphone to operate it.

Well, as much as I like B&O, for me in the end it's just technology that ages, and then I loose my interest.
For example the MX4000, which was the first B&O I bought brand new, and loved for years, became just an old CRT television, that I don't want anymore. Same for the beautiful Beosound 9000, which in the end became just an unnecessary item between the Sonos and the Beolabs.
So I sold everything over the last weeks, and now only have left two pairs of Beolab 8000 and a Beo6, which I'm not sure about yet. I see no value in keeping stuff I don't want or use, it will only loose more value over time.
Good news is I bought an 11-55 last week, with the intention of replacing both sound system and television. Hope I will enjoy it for years, although I'm a little worried reading all the complaints on the 11 this week…. Nevertheless, from my point of view, you only need one piece of B&O, and some speakers.

Wouldn't it be awful if you needed more than you want?

Drew is right, as much as your house and budget can accommodate.

tournedos: Wouldn't it be awful if you needed more than you want?
From my own experience (not B&O related)... yes it is.
But it probably isn't equally as awful if you want more than you need.
I wonder what Leslie has to say about this discussion.
I also own more than I use. But at the same time, I know that I won't buy any of the newer stuff since I just don't feel like it. I just don't like the idea of buy, use, throw away, repeat. I like the idea to refurbish, nourish and keep old things much more. Therefore, I still happily use CRT televisions and consider the combination of the Beosystem 7000 and the Beolab Penta one of the best affordable combinations that fulfills all of my conceivabilities at an affordable price. They won't make things like that any more. Please don't get me wrong. I also appreciate the newer stuff very much, but it's just not for me. I have all my music on records, CDs and cassettes and see no reason to change that - neither now nor in the nearer future.
Hi Kai,
I’m with you.
I still have a 1964 RCA Colour television that still works, my mother’s 1946 orange juicer, which looks/works just like the day they made it, and my main stereo is McIntosh circa 1971 with Tandberg 9000 reel-to-reel of the same year.
Plus you are right, no one is making powerful stereos anymore, so if we want one, we’d better take care of the fine examples from the past…. and we do; as members of BeoWorld proves.

I think the complicated answer on this question can bee only calculated by this calculator!
Vintage Bang & Olufsen
Very cool, is that for real or Photoshop?
Piaf: Very cool, is that for real or Photoshop? Jeff
I think it's real. It was advertised on the local website but unfortunately I was not quick enough and didn't get it
Did anybody see this rare calculator before?
