Comrades
I recently purchased a beosound 5, to replace my lovely beocentre 2. The beocentre played N.MUSIC/ N.RADIO via a macmini, beoport and a DAC, then to Beovision 8 and beolab 9s. The sound was never quite right. I played with the beolabs, got rid of most of my compressed music and it still was a disappointment to me. I always suspected 'over processing' of the music going from mac, to beoport, to DAC to Beovision to beolabs,,,,but I was assured it was all set up correctly.
Mid January, the beosound 5 arrived. We've had some issues with software versions (now fixed) and some challenges converting ALAC to FLAC etc, particularly with non english language characters- i.e they would not display correctly in the beosound. Getting the correct metadata was also a challenge. SWITCH file converter sorted that- it gives the correct alphabet in most European languages and seems to do a good job converting files.
So yesterday, for the first time since we purchased the beosound 5, after being able to finally start to transfer good quality music and have it indexed/ displayed correctly we listened to our music. We listened to WMA and FLAC files as well as using the ripper as a CD player. The result was quite amazing. I actually heard sounds in some of my CDs and Files not heard before. The sound was for the first time truly beautiful. My beolab 9's now sound incredible after 5 years!!!!!! Both my partner and I were staggered at how brilliant our music sounds. The CD capability of the beocentre 2 doesnt appear to sound anywhere near as good as the beosound 5 CD ripper..
So to anyone thinking about a beosound 5 and beolab 9 combo... DO IT (if funds allow).... And do get your files into lossless, they really do sound great.. Recordings that I previously thought a little muddy, occassionally shrill now sound almost breathtaking...... Even Pop now sounds just fine!
Thought it was time I posted something positive!!!! I now feel justified having paid so much money for our products
Best Wishes
David

Great to hear David!
Those Beolab 9's deserve the best quality input signal they can get, as they are very revealing of the source I find, and certainly don't paper over any cracks.
I'm streaming ALAC files (ripped from CD's) from my iMac/iTunes direct to an ATV connected by HDMI to my V1-40, but in time as funds permit, would prefer to move to an B&O source.
Really pleased to hear that the Lab 9's are performing so well!
Congrats.. :-)

Great result .
Good morning David. I had a new Beosound 5 and Beolab 18's delivered last week, replacing a Beosound 3000 CD/Tuner and a pair of Beolab 6000's.
Very pleased with the new setup. Still figuring out how to use it properly and I don't have much music on it at the moment but moving music from iTunes on an iMac with Beoconnect is excellent.

Thanks for that - we really need these 'good stories' too on the forum!
Glad it worked out well in the end.

I'd really encourage you to set up your library using lossless- the SWITCH music file converter has worked well for me for music on my Mac mini- able to convert ALAC/AIFF to FLAC with no problem and all the metadata even in non english language is correct so you get a nice tidy display on the beosound 5. Ive not been terribly impressed with the artwork the CD ripper finds- quite low resolution. www.discogs.com has great high resolution cover art. Enjoy

Thanks David. I will take a look at SWITCH. No point in having a system like the Beosound 5 and playing lossy files. Will also check out discogs.
