My Beomaster 4500 was rebuilt about a month ago with stellar results. After an abundantly cautious break-in period this Beomaster 4500 proved to be a real winner.

However a few days ago I selected TAPE 1 which initially began to play and then the Beomaster 4500 shut down. Selecting any other source had no effect.

I tried using the remote, but this made no difference.

By accident I discovered the FM section still functioned. All radio pre-sets work from the Beomaster 4500 keys or using the remote.

In addition selecting the CD player with the remote, not the Beomaster 4500 key pads, caused the Beogram 4500 to begin playing, but not the Beomaster 4500 itself.

I then disconnected the power and let the Beomaster 4500 sit for a minute. When the power was restored, in spite of the volume being set to a VERY low level there was a pronounced loud BOOM in both speakers and all functions were restored.

Any ideas what this means, for now in the present and for the future?

Jeff

And the saga continues!

It seems like an accidental reset to me. A mobile phone-related problem? Perhaps the microcomputer doesn't like it? I noticed that my Beomaster 8000 didn't like my iPhone. Its vicinity made it unstable.

I saw your post from yesterday Jeff and almost made a post suggesting you unplug the set and let sit for a spell to see if it would reset to normal when you plugged it back in.

Glad to hear it is all working again.

My Beomaster 3000(s) (I have more than one) will do something similar with the volume either getting stuck at 30 or at max with nothing selected . Only way to fix is to unplug and wait for it to reset. then all is fine again.

It has happened maybe a half dozen times in the last 5 years. Really weird. I have no idea as to the cause but what Jacques is saying make plausible sense. Plus mine is located near a modern flat panel TV and a Mac  mini on Wifi.

Hi Jacques and Ricardo,

Jacques, I fear you give me too much credit for being up-to-date. My cell phone is a flip phone and I use it only when away from home. So smart phone interference is not an issue.

Before the repair when my Beomaster 4500 was ailing it occasionally would not turn on, so I unplugged it and all was well. That’s where I got the idea and although unrelated to the former issue, it solved the problem.

So yes Jacques, the sage continues after a fashion.

I believe there is an IC that controls changing from source to source and that IC had a hiccup. Maybe a future problem, maybe not.

In any case the Beomaster 4500 has passed numerous “tests” with no further problems, so I am a happy camper.

Thanks to you both for your input.

I was getting nervous here, but experience with these problems  (Ricardo and Jacques) solved it, lets hope you will have no more troubles.

Also have a flip phone Laughing

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Hi

That boom is probably because protection circuit (relay) is not on the game yet right after mains-up, so random voltages appear...

And any phone, smart or not talks with basestation regulary wether you use it or not, to avoid it you have to completely swithc off.

 blah-blah and photographs as needed

Hi Søren,

Thanks for the concern, no te preocupes; I am VERY used to senior electronics and they all have hiccups now and then. In many ways it is part of their “charm.”

Benny blames either my Beocord 8004 or Beogram 4500 CD player for sending an “incorrect” signal to the Beomaster 4500. Frankly, I don’t buy that in part because the Beocord 8004 is too old for two-way communication it just provides an audio signal and the Beogram 4500 was off when the problem occurred.

I think it was the IC that controls switching from one source to another. If this lock-up doesn’t occur too often I really don’t care. How much trouble is it to unplug the Beomaster 4500? Not much!

The good news is Benny says my Beogram 2400 is finished. Hallelujah! It just needs a few days for testing and then back to the frozen north.

Lastly, in explanation for the “no te preocupes,” it is one of my favourite retained expressions from my high school Spanish class days. People here in western Canada do not expect anyone to speak Spanish….. French maybe, but not Spanish, so when I would have a Spanish speaking customer I would always manage to drop in a Spanish sentence….. made sale after sale that way.

As you know my Spanish is too limited and my accent is so pronounced that I could never carry on a conversation in Spanish, my accent alone would have them rolling on the floor with laughter. However peppering a conversation with a bit of Spanish here and there made for a considerable bond between the customer and me….. hence the sales.

When I was store manager downtown I had a Cuban employee who completely trumped my Spanish card, as she spoke fluent Spanish, naturally. However her reaction to my “version” of her language was well worth my effort, as I’d have her gasping for breath with laughter. Dailyn says I speak Castilian Spanish with a heavy American accent spiced with faulty memory. (Those lessons were after all, 48 years ago.)

When the Beomaster 2400 arrives, I will let you guys know!
