Might be nothing, but noticed my MMC20EN has a red label on the rear. Is this anything to do with the prototypes that have been mentioned on this site before or does it relate to something else?

I don't think so.
I have seen this type of label on many MMCs.
My guess is that it connects the cartridge to the alignment- and testcard that originally came with the cartridge.
