Hi,

I have decided to move into to teh digital world of music. I have all my music stored on a QNAP NAS which I currently use with a mac  mini and itunes. I have an ipad and was looking at the QNAP app that will allow me to stream music from the NAS to an ATV or my Beolit 12 but the interface is not great.

Are there any apps out there that have a nice interface, easy to use (the wife instist on this) and work well (I am sure people have mentioned Apps before but a search did not bring anything up).

Thanks

Toby

Hi Toby,

if you use iTunes for organizing your files, you have an iPad and an ATV, just mount the drive (with your files are stored on the Qnap) on your MacMini - and use the 'Remote' app from Apple as the interface for AirPlaying the files/the music.

Of cource you will have to have your Mini turned on 24/7, but that should be no problem, since it is very quiet and demands little power.

If you have an 'iTunes server' running on the NAS, it might be possible to use that to feed the Remote app. But I would not recommend that, since the 'iTunes servers' on NAS'es aren't very reliable.

P.S. do you have that much music that it wouldn't fit on MacMini (drive), or on an attached USB-drive?

That's exactly what I do. My Mac mini is always on shuffling my music collection. Anytime I turn on the speakers in one of my link rooms, my music is right there. If I want to change a song or playlist, just use the Remote app. Same thing if I want to sit down to listen to an album rather than just background music. Couldn't be simpler.

Hi,

Thank you for the replies, that would certainly work. The problem I have just thought about is that I have just brought my wife a ipad mini, so if I am listening in one room and she in another, we can not use the the remote app and the same mac mini.

I only have around 500gb of music (the mac mini has a 250gb SSD).

So guess the question still applies is there app that we can both use to stream music in different rooms of the house?

Regards

Toby

p.s. I am sure life was simpler when we could both go into seperate rooms and listen to different cds on different players.

Hi Toby,

first of all - you can't use 2 different AirPlay-streams at a time!

If you have a DLNA server running on your NAS (or Mac) - most NAS'es have one preinstalled - you could use a DLNA app on an iThingy.

BUT if you only have one iPad (the Mini) it will be different - but not impossible (if you could agree on how to use it) to manage things.

Could you perhaps use the audio output from the MacMini to play back 'your' music directly to the tv (BV) - I don't know where things are located in your home (?)

If you would sit in 'separate rooms and listen to cds on different players', you would need 2 players and (at least) 2 sets of loudspeakers - if you see what I mean Cool

So just let your wife buy you another iPad Mini Stick out tongue

What are your possibilities? Do you have an AudioMaster (or a set of BeoLabs) where you could hook up a Playmaker (or an Essence!!!) for DLNA playback?

Greetings MM

Hi,

thanks for the responses. Each room will aether have a set of beolabs or beovox and passive amp or a beomaster, or the beolit 12. I have brought my wife a iPad mini so we now have 2 in the house.

i have some airport expresses, which I plan to connect to the beomasters, so I guess it's which DNLA apps do people recomend ?

thanks

Toby

PlugPlayer, 8Player - both have AirPlay output too.

But for 'pure' DLNA playback you would need a device like the Playmaker.

You can use your stock music app on the ipad/iphone to connect to an itunes library (eg on the mac mini). You can do that on both ipads, both playing music from your shared library, independently from each other.

Quite right, but you can't AirPlay two different streams to two different AirPlay receivers (in the same network) at one time - which is what badgersurf and his wife wanted to do.

I have just tried that and it does work! Iphone streaming to a Beolit 12, macbook streaming to an xbmc server (via airplay). Both in the same room and network.

Of course, having two idevices streaming their music from the itunes computer, AND streaming the audio to two other airplay devices might be asking a lot of the wifi network.

You could however eliminate one (or two) (wifi) streams. If the mac mini has a wired connection, you could let that one play and stream to one airplay device (using the standard remote app to control itunes on that mac mini). The other ipad could just play from the shared library and stream to another airplay device.

Thanks for all the replies. I am away with work for the next 2 weeks so will have a play when I get back. Also hopefully will then get to see the essence as well and see if that will work with my new plans
