I was so excited to find a used Beocom 6000... I've always wanted one.

The handset didn't work at all, so I got a new battery and charged it.

It just displayed "OUT OF RANGE".

I tried removing the battery and reinstalling it.  When I did that, there was nothing on the display.  I set it on the base (the light on the base turned green), and when I removed the handset, it displayed "SEARCH BASE" for several seconds, and then returned to "OUT OF RANGE".

From what I've been able to find online so far, it could be a problem with the RF chip on the circuit board.

Are there any other possibilities I can test for, and if it was the RF chip, is there a US kit to replace it, or any good repair facilities in the US?

Thank you in advance for any help or advice!

Welcome to Beoworld,

I love my Beocom 6000's too!

First off, what 'base' do you have?  Is it definitely a 'master base' (the big silver pyramid type, with the green light) or just a battery charger base (small black with a green light)?

Just because you bought the phone and base together from a seller, it doesn't mean it is the full system for you to operate - it will depend on the type of base.

Get back to us and we'll see if anyone can help.

Dave.

Hi!  Yeah, after surfing around for a solution, Beoworld looks really cool.  Might be time to fulfill my longstanding dream of getting some vintage B&O audio...!

It's a big silver 'pyramid' / master base.

Thanks again!

Where did you get the battery?  Those phones are very picky about which batteries will work with them, and most (e.g. Radio Shack) won't work properly.  And when you insert a new battery you're supposed to 'tell' the handset that you have by punching in 9#9#9*655 on the handset.  It will beep several times after you do this (obviously you have to charge it for several minutes before you can do this).   Then it might be a good idea to reset the handset (I'm assuming it's not registered to the base.  If it is, you should reset the base FIRST).   Do this by pushing DOT (between A V) 70009, then OK.   If you then hang up the phone in the base unit (make sure it's plugged in), it should automatically register itself.

Let us know.  You might want to become a silver or gold member to gain access to the full instruction manual.

I bought the battery on eBay (the only places I could find it were eBay and Amazon - open to suggestions!).  It's an HQRP brand battery, and the description says the only phone it fits is the Beocom 6000.

I hadn't reset the base, so I tried that first - the dot button didn't display anything, so when I then entered 70009, and okay, it asked me if I wanted to store it as an entry.

I also tried the handset reset code, but that didn't do anything... no beeping, no display.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions so far.  Still open to any other ideas.

I really appreciate the time and support!!

I think those HQRP batteries are okay but you still have to enter the code to tell the handset it has a new battery.  This is the only time the handset will beep.

I didn't mention how to reset the base, so I'm not sure how you tried it.  IF the handset is registered to the base, the command to reset the base is DOT 70008 OK   If the handset isn't registered to the base, you can't reset it.

Thanks for clarifying that.  In your earlier post, I misunderstood --- I thought the "dot 70009 OK" was to reset the base.

So, when I do "dot 70008 OK", it asks me whether I want to STORE the 70008 number.  I think the issue may be with the dot key or something.  When I push "dot" to start the "dot 70008 OK" sequence, the dot key doesn't do anything; no display, no beep, etc.  It's also possible that when it's stuck in "Out of Range" it's not connected to the base, and therefore can't reset it?  Maybe the dot key is bad?  I really wish I could just get it out of the "Out of Range" mode.

Thanks again!

Hi,

checking the dot key is quite easy: press the dot key, release it then press the A key or V key.and release it.  Now turn the wheel and the display should show LINK. If not the dot key is bad. Also pressing the dot key, release it and then pressing the 7 key should give you the start of the menu. Turning the wheel should rotate then through the various menu items.

Hope that helps a bit

Thank you very much!  Well, that may be the whole problem.

"dot A" = Volume Audio

"dot V" = Volume Video

"dot 7" = 7

...So the whole issue may be the "dot" key.

I could try opening it and cleaning the contact...?

Anyway, maybe it just wasn't my lucky day after all.  I'll just have to keep my eyes open for the next Beocom...

If anyone else has other ideas, I'll still try anything...  otherwise, I really appreciate the great support from everyone!

Ok, so we know one fault..

As far as i know you can't open the keyboard unit in the upper case without damage.

I had this problem in 2007 with my beocom 6000 and ordered the new, complete uppercase from a B&O dealer for about 16 EUR.

Replacing the upper case includes a new display and some aditional parts and can be done yourself. But the dealer should also be able to do it for you for a small fee.
