eek!
suspect this may be a lub or belt issue but not sure .
The pick up point at the end of a record seems to strain the cantilever too? It has a lot of lateral movement on the cantilever before it lifts.
have tried to remove the aluminium panels but the 2 on the right as you look it i.e. on the arm at rest side, don't want to move and I don't wish to force the issue.
all help/wisdom gratefully received.
I had a similar problem on my 4004, I fixed it by cleaning the old grease off the long screw and two silver bars that hold the tone arm, then puting fresh oil on those parts. Running it back and forth to work it in (you might have to turn the long screw manually at first). I also had to replace the belt between the tonearm servo and the long screw, which was slipping causing the arm to jam up. If that doesn't work you might want to check to see if the gimbals the whole system is mounted on are not too tight/loose, it can cause the tone arm to jam.
The speed at which the tone arm picks up and drops can be adjusted by a small screw and by cleaning up this assembly:

(Thank you jeules0 for that link)
The belt needed between the tonearm servo and long brass screw is a SCX4.0
thanks thats just what I'm hoping. New belts arrived today just awaiting the sewing machine oil.
many thanks
