Bang & Olufsen struggles with turnround

The retailer is considering a fundraising to boost R&D

Shares in luxury stereo and television maker Bang & Olufsen plunged on Friday, after the Danish company reported a larger-than-expected quarterly loss and said it is looking at ways to raise capital and boost growth.

The electronics producer reported a Dkr28m ($5.2m) loss before interest and tax for the three months to the end of February, compared with a loss of Dkr114m a year earlier. Although this represented an improvement, the loss was still bigger than analysts’ median forecast of Dkr13.4m. Revenue increased 3 per cent to Dkr675m. Shares in the group closed down 13 per cent on Friday, at Dkr58.

Bang & Olufsen’s core European business is selling stylish but expensive audio equipment and televisions. While its European business turned around during the quarter, sales of its lower-cost B&O Play range, aimed at a younger market, decreased by 25 per cent.

Lars Topholm, head of research at Carnegie Investment Bank, said the quarterly performance was a cause for concern as B&O Play was intended to “recruit new customers who will subsequently trade up” and drive growth in sales of its more expensive products.

“It’s a target audience that just isn’t very loyal,” said Mr Topholm, who has a “sell” rating on the stock. He added that the evolution of new technologies was shortening product life cycles and pushing up the cost of keeping product offerings up to date.

Bang & Olufsen chief executive Tue Mantoni said that revenues for B&O Play had been hit by a lack of new product launches and dealers focusing on selling more expensive audiovisual equipment.

Performance in China, where Bang & Olufsen is trying to expand through a partnership with Sparkle Roll, a luxury goods company, also disappointed. In 2012, the Danish group entered into a deal with both Sparkle Roll and A Capital, a private equity group, to expand its presence in the Chinese market. But revenues from the country fell during the quarter, the company said.

Bang & Olufsen said it is looking at ways to raise capital to spend on distribution and marketing, as well as funding research and development for new products.

Friday’s share price reaction suggested that investors wanted the company to focus on fixing its current strategy before raising capital, argued Jesper Christensen, an equity analyst at Alm Brand Markets.

Bang & Olufsen also reported that it had been shutting down under-performing stores. Globally, store numbers have been cut from 582 at the end of November to 564 at the end of February, the company said.

Does B&O really have any relevance to most of us today? The answer is no. The styling is outdated, the quality questionable and the price in an orbit that bears little comparison to peers.

@ Philip Wilson: Perhaps I've been lucky but I've used the B&O system I bought about fifteen years ago almost everyday since I bought it - and it's travelled across national borders a couple of times - and it works, along with the remote control, as well as it did when I bought it and it's never needed repair. Perhaps it depends on the model?

The only problem I've had was with the hands free microphone headphones supplied with their Serenata mobile phone: one of the very thin wires broke, so I ended up with mono a headphone, but it appears they may've addressed this in their latest version.

@ kim: You're out of date; you've been able to attach B&O speakers, for example, to non-B&O amps for quite some time.

I believe B & O’s lack luster financial performance goes beyond product innovation. High end products, no matter the cost, must be accompanied by exceptional customer service and IT support. B & O’s has deteriorated. I have been using B & O products for many years and in July 2013 purchased an entire system, TV / Audio and all accessories for over > $50,000 US from their 927 Broadway location in NYC. To date it does not work. More disturbing, I have yet to receive any communication from the Store Manager on Broadway in NYC. Only the unreliable Sales person, who during the two day install, asked me to go buy a surge protector, then, when I got back, asked me to purchase another one. (I did pay for them when I contracted with B & O). Unfortunately, by the time I got back with the 2nd surge protector, the install team was not able to finish. They did not return for quite some time. Despite being prewired, the install took over 6 weeks. Then it did not function. I raised my concerns first to the unreliable sales person who called me three times after midnight when I threatened to return the system. Most popular response is, “I’ll check next week to see when we can send someone out.” Then I do not hear from him. I followed up by I calling K. Peterson in the US B & O Sales Headquarters in Chicago. Over the past 7 weeks, Mr. Peterson has left me two messages asking me to call him which I do, but nothing is resolved. I travel often and the next step will be legal and heavy social media. Shame I have to go this route. They should consider implementing a quality control survey. Signed, a very disappointed, frustrated and former B & O client. Does anyone think Tue Mantoni (CEO) will read this and take pro-active action.

Closed under-performing stores ? each store sold a mere Dkk 1.2 million in the quarter, or EUR 160k per store ! Are these figures correct ?

The problem with B&O is : they are beautyfull but not high end sounding

B&O is toast. The quality and reliability is bad.

The days when they were the choice of those who wanted their homes to be seamless are gone when we either demand the flexibility of wireless (and accept the degradation) or accept wire but, at this price and for the inconvenience, demand something special.

The days when they were the reference sound (many of Billie Holiday's albums were recorded via B&O systems, albeit her producer was then also Danish).

Neither great sound, nor wireless. Between two stools. And just living upon a reputation.

And deliberately making it impossible to attach non-B&O equipment to their own.

    What's there to like ?

I have several B&O products - although they look very good and the sound quality is not bad- they seem to be poorly built and don't last. My former neighbors in LA had their whole house fitted a B&O integrated sound system. They told me it never really worked. They paid about $10k about 12 years ago. My CD player stopped working after a couple of years and my headphones had to be replaced 4 times. I find their products to be a good illustration of how good looks on their own are worhtless
    EDIT
Whole article and comments above.... Some garbled as FT does not like you to copy!
  • Follow the link for the full article and also read the comments some of which reinforce old perceptions, but some should give concern. Any Beoworlders making points there?
Odd that BeoPlay sales are down but are being blamed on a focus on higher priced equipment!
