I just bought a beogram 8002 off Ebay for 500.00 with mmc2 cart.
Even though I gave detailed instructions on how to lock it pack etc. He diverted from the plan.
He could not figure out the lock down screws, (just have to back them out) and he did not bother to ask me how. What he ended up doing is trying to stop the suspension Jiggle by wrapping the platter in thin bubble wrap. And put some small Styrofoam blocks around the tone arm. Then he put the platter back on.
When I got it the silver top cover was loose (he claims its old glue but failed to tell me) I can fix that pretty easy. But the sound was horrid. Thought the cart was bad. Turned out the plastic slider weight moved from 1 gram to .3. or maybe when he packed it. It does not slide that easy so not sure how that got off.
I got that working. The gap around the platter is larger in the front that the back, not sure if something moved during shipping. It does not scrape so mostly cosmetic.
When it plays there is a slight toe in. The tone arm moves towards the fixed sensor arm so they are not quite parallel. I think it can be adjust but not sure if its a big deal or not.
The outside looks good, and the controls work.
He thinks his way of shipping was good and that the platter did not need to be taken off. I think he should have used the lock as even with the bubble wrap it jiggles a ton.
I am wondering if shipping it unlocked like that caused an unseen damage.
Some say get money back. Is this a big deal or just keep it and cross fingers? Or maybe a discount off the 500.00 since he failed on packing.
What do you think?
You can adjust the tone arm. Download the service manual from the relevant section and that will explain how to do it.
Very unfortunate about the shipping issues. If was me, I'd want a refund. Up to you.
After 30 years, these machines are getting fragile and a full restoration is recommended. Not securing properly for shipping wouldn't of helped.
Unfortunately the majority of eBay sellers, in my experience, do not have the faintest idea about how to properly pack things like turntables. Even with the platter properly locked down the Beogram needs to be double boxed with plenty of foam between the boxes. And there will always be some idiot in the courier or postal chain who thinks it is OK to throw your parcel or drop it.
These turntables really need careful handling. If you have any doubts about possible damage in transit I would ask for a refund, but if the item was good value for money, even with the risk of needing repairs, you may decide to keep it and ask for a partial refund. If you can get a second opinion on whether the failure to lock down the turntable caused actual damage and get a repair estimate then that would be the reduction to ask for.

Thanks for the input. I went over everything with him before hand. Double boxing, platter off. He got baffled on the lock nuts and figured his alternative way was just as good. Its right in the first page of the manual he sent.
How much off would you think would be fair? I paid 500.00 and it does work. But it did get shook up some. Cart works, outside good. Just annoyed that he changed the plan on packing. And he still thinks it was a good job. I think he just said that so he could claim under FedEx and not eat the 500.00
Do you mean adjust the toe in or the balance? Its not toed in much and not sure if it affects the performance. Not ready to tear it down just yet.
Hi there, i ve not posted for many years now, but this one is close to my heart(and wallet) so I have woken up.
At 500.00 I would want a refund too. The Tangential tracking turntables are impossibly fragile, I bought a nice, fully working Beogram 6002 for 250.00 and picked it up from the seller 20 miles away. Decided I would not need to lock it down for such a short trip and put it carefully on the back seat, big mistake, the sensor arm doesnt move along with the tone arm now!, it was fine at the sellers house. Well at least I got a nice MMC3 cartridge with it ( I have given up on my Fruitless search for a B&O dealer who might repair it), I put it in my Beogram 5000. I cant ask for my money back, but at least you can.
Rajod-what was the outcome?
Did you keep it and if so, how is it doing?
I hope you sent this back - shipping with a platter loose can lead to bent shafts, knackered bearings, damage to the top, the platter or the lid. If the shipper ignores a simple and clear request to ship it safely (especially if he has the manual), the onus is on them if there is a problem - which there is.
Get your money back and buy a better one. As said before, any MMC cartridge will need rebuilding (and can be rebuilt up to MMC1 spec) so don't worry about what cart comes with it too much.
Dave.
'Just realized that the OP is the same guy who just posted about a TX-2 w/MMC-2 that he bought on eBay that was damaged during shipping. He doesn't seem to be having much luck
Same crazy high price too, probably due to automated bidding without a sensible max bid! I hope they weren't from the same seller!
Yes I have been buying lots of turntables. I think I have had two of eight come in undamaged.
Mostly they don't know how to pack. or they forget to lock the screws, fail to secure the tone arms. Fail to take platter off. Ruin cartridge taking it off because they don't know what they are doing. Pack cartridge face down on hard plastic with needle on it. Squished suspensions. I've seen it all.
I did keep it. He gave me a 300.00 Refund. I got it working. I've been buying mmc carts for back ups. Have two mmc2, two mm3 one mmc4.
I just got another 8002 today. Wasted suspension on the mmc4. But I think all mmc carts are on their last legs even if never used. The rubber seems to break down and shipping can put them over the edge. I'm going to send a few out to Benny for rebuilds.
I wish I had a decent manual for the 8002. I have the original instruction (useless) also have the PDF of the service manual. But its pretty crude and could be much better.
A good result then, well done.
If you upgrade your membership to Silver or Gold, you have access to these manuals (user and service) on this forum. You get access to all of the manuals in fact for when you buy some more B&O equipment!
Oh I might pay once I have been here for awhile. I started this thread on Audiokarm which I paid for and they do not like B&O turntables over there. One guy said I was crazy for wanting a MID-FI turntable like that. A few guys got into a side war over ebay packing etc. Somehow the admins banned one of them and then (by accident I think) gave me a 3 day ban and was very rude in PM. No warning or good reason was given, no apologies etc. Messages to admins were ignored, they don't follow their own rules. Very Draconian over there.
I'll see how it goes here before I invest any more money in forums.
UtOh! Another B&O perv! Very good!
It's Phil from AK. You are right and wrong.
You are right that AK can be a little dysfunctional at the moderation level and sometimes mods seem to impose penalties that seem whimsical or inappropriate. Sorry to hear you were treated harshly. Despite that, AK is a great resource and MOST of the community healthy and helpful.
You are wrong that nobody likes or defends B&O over there. There are several of us that defend B&O vigorously, especially the turntables and cartridges, although I sometimes felt like a heretic with my posts suggesting what might be wrong and how to resolve it. I'm glad you kept the table and bet you are as well.
Did you try my tip to straighten out the tonearm (to 90* & parallel to sensor arm)?
Did you ever zero balance the arm to get clear that the tracking weight slider was indicating actual TF?
Oh I liked the people at AK (users) it was the mods and some guy named grumpy. I won't support a site with people like that running the show.
I do have the tone arm and sensor parallel. Both B&O 8002 can play records now. There are small issues in both.
1. The one from the AK posts was the first one I purchased. That one got shook up in shipping from the locks being off. I got it working but on accasion it will drop a channel. Probably dying cart. I'm sending out two carts for rebuild which should fix that.
2. The second 8002 has the floppy tone arm syndrome. In the locked position the tone arm can be lifted even higher and moved left or right (even above the sensor arm) with no resistance. Its as if a spring is missiing. The other 8002 the tone arm stays put at rest, and will not allow you to lift it higher. It will resist left and right movement and snap back to center position. It does not seem to affect play though.
So both are working with minor issues.
As far as I know, if an MMC 1-5 cartridge drops a channel, it is unrepairable.(i.e: open circuit)
Why don't you try them in the other table first?
The channel does not drop to zero. Just lower output vs other side. I would say it happens 5 percent of the time. And never if its been on awhile. Its transient. I have a bunch of mmcs. Sending out 3 for rebuilds, then I'll know for sure.
I have tried them in other table. Can't get channel to drop out. So its possible that its the phono input of my sansui too.
