I am thinking about buying a BS5e - not the BS5/BM5 combination, because I want a stand-alone music player just connected to my Beolab 9 speakers. The BS5/BM5 combination always looked too bulky to me.

From this forum I heard that the BS5e is discontinued already and that's why I think of getting one of the last few units. The Software, however, should be mature at this point, as I don't expect many updates anymore. What is the current state of the BS5e software?

  • BS5/BM5 runs an embedded Windows XP, does the BS5e, too? Or does it run on Linux?
  • Gapless playback - this was an issue in earlier versions. Is the BS5e capable of gapless playback?
  • Fast forward / rewind within tracks - can this be done with a Beo4 remote? I read that early versions of the BS5 software could not do that, and this would be a total dealbreaker.

Handling... could someone give me advice on the UI handling of the BS5e? I understand the laser pointer, the wheel and know that Genre sort is not available (pity!).

Because when I listen to music, I usually want to hear one particular song from a database of currently 8000+ titles. The name of the song I don't know, nor do I remember the artist. Album neither. But I know it's in the middle of an album that is among the last of albums files unter "Jazz". And the cover is somehow purple.

There you go: Goodnite on the Album Worrysome Heart from Melody Gardot . That was easy on my computer. How would I go for that on the BS5e? Does the cover sort do it, if I re-tag all my albums with a short Genre tag at the beginning of the album name? What if I want to hear the entire album, now that I found it? Starting at this track? Can the system act like a CD Player and does it show the playlist? I want to see, which tracks are next, because I don't have the CD booklet anymore.

Any help and advice is appreciated!

If you're thinking of getting an encore I would wait until the new "moment" is released and then you can compare and then the encore is probably cheaper.  The didn't sell that well from what I understand on this forum, so you will still find stock i think at a dealer.

- Encore is also Windows, but you never really access the OS

- Gapless playback I'm not sure what you mean , but if i had a song on my NAS and the album was gapless i.e. one song into another it would play

- I don't know about the control with a Beo4, as I never had a Beo4, maybe someone else can assist you

Encore can take a little while to initialise / start up

This may also be of use to you re genres http://www.bang-olufsen.com/~/media/Files/User%20Guides/BeoSound5/beosound5-encore_gettingstarted_english.pdf

Interesting description of the process ... now I have 3 copies of that track, but would never have remembered it, nor its cover as they all came via iTunes rather than browsing CDs in a shop ... where as for rips from my CD collection I think/recall the same way you did ...

Now days I simply type (clearly I don't have a BS5e) that start of the artist's name rather than cherry pick a song.

You have inspired me to start playing the song Big Smile

edit - turns out the following comes from me fiddling with my Mac's MIDI set-up - so please ignore - the recording is perfect once I bypassed my set-up ...

... which I find has an interesting "crackle" that I don't remember hearing before ... do you have it on your recording ? It's comes from right channel and is on several tracks but not on other albums !

:-) I have two versions as well and the second has been added as personal "bonus track" to this album... nevertheless I almost always remember some detail of the cover - without cover images (or full-text search) I'm lost.

Thank you for your answer! With gapless playback I mean uninterupted playback of the tracks of an album, no pause inbetween. This has been critizised as missing in an older thread on this forum. As was the missing fast forward/backward function.

Encore on Windows is interesting! That would be one more reason to buy one, as we can hope for software updates continuing as long as the BS5/BM5 is current, if it uses the same software. But you are probably right, the BS5e will probably not become more expensive. Is the new "moment" an upcoming product? Any any rumors when it will be released?
