Beyond silly question, but some setting in my computer has changed which will not allow selecting the “smilies” logos to add to a posting.

When I select this option, the box is blank.

What can I do to restore this feature?

With all the problems in the world today, can you imagine worrying about something as trivial as this?

None the less thank you for your patience and hopefully suggestions!

Personally, I detest them and wouldn't decry their loss.  Especially when people use the smug whistling one which says to me 'Ive got x but you haven't'.  It's the equivalent of sticking 2 fingers up in my mind and completely uneccessary.

Emoticons should be banned and it should be left to people's concise comments to convey what they mean.  Not a face on a screen which could be open to misinterpretation.

Dave.

I have had the same experience as Jeff for more than half a year now.

I have to use copy/paste to put smileys in my postings.

How kind of you Martin. However I do see the smilies work for you…. maybe you have to be Danish.

Obviously this is not a priority issue, but that said, when a website offers a service or option, it should work. N’es pas?

Hi Søren,

While it appears to be a site problem rather than one on my computer, I did have an Internet Explorer issue that required me to clear everything out of the Explorer (cookies included) and while that fixed my access problem with Gmail and Facebook, it did nothing for the emoticon “issue.”

Dave doesn’t like them, but I rather do….. adds just the right touch…. now and then. Whatever, not a big deal! J

Hi Dave,

I am sorry you feel that way about the emoticons.

In truth it has everything to do with how and why they are used.

Now people that use them to be crude, demeaning, or cruel….. well I detest that too! Big time!

However when one finishes a BIG job, like Søren’s Beomaster 4400, an emoticon with a big happy face seems more than appropriate.

They have other mitigating uses, in that occasionally a strong post needs to be sent (I have both sent and received same) and adding that smile at the end softens the hard message.

I tried it and the copy appeared in MS Word, but then transferred to the post and the smiling face disappeared.

This "problem" should be the worst thing to ever happen to any person.

Right Jeff. And comes to it, we are different nationalities, with different kinds of humor. A Dane will understand, "what a nice haircut, did you do it yourself", as a joke, but others may be offended, so a smiling face after the joke, will show, this is a joke, dont be offended. And a lot  comes out wrong when translating directly, word by word. Translating  directly, from Danish "I took a little Grandfather" (Jeg tog en lille morfar) gives no meaning, The right one is "I took a small nap in the afternoon".

First off Søren, I don’t want to forget to acknowledge your comment that all we need are the smiles as we are “happy” people. I have NO doubt this is true…. but thank you kind sir for noticing.

Different nationalities make for different people, who can question that?

My knowledge of Danes is quite limited, but one thing that stands out in my mind is my belief that the Danish people are the nicest people on Earth. Honorable as well.

There is an old joke, from years ago that went: if an American lost their wallet in Copenhagen and went back a year later, they would find their wallet with three Danes standing guard over it. Says a LOT about a people.

I also have a memory of being lost in Copenhagen with my parents and we asked (in English of course) a construction worker how to go somewhere. Well now that man stopped what he was doing and didn’t tell us how to get there, he walked us over.

I am sad to say I rather doubt an American would do the same.

As for a sense of humor, there I am not sure but I suspect that the average American has a really good sense of humor, possible more so than the somewhat reserved Danes. (If I am wrong about this, please correct me.)

Of course I personally am hysterical…. a frustrated comedian, sarcastic, ironic….. funny. My worst detractors would at least allow that I am one, honest, and two, funny. (The rest we can skip!)

Back to the emoticons, what I was trying to convey for Dave’s benefit (ours too) is that when saying something harsh, something needed, it can be useful to soften the remark with a big smile, as if to say ”Are we still friends?” And 9 out of 10 cases, we will be as a result. Big Smile

All the best!

Jeff

Go back to your Seeburg Jeff, I think we had enough of this to todaySmile

Hi Søren,

Ah the Seeburg, one has to be in the RIGHT frame of mine for that. As such I will tackle it tomorrow.

Both A-side (which is God awful) and B-side, which is fair, but not good need more pressure. The problem is when adding pressure to one side you decrease the pressure on the other. It is a very sensitive balancing act which REQUIRES a pressure gauge which I don’t have.

That means pure trial and error and these adjustments are minute. This is going to take some time!

As for giving help….. my goodness I would love to help, but I am just NOT in your league, or Jacques’, or Dave’s for that matter. It is no disgrace to be non-technically oriented, but it does limit what one can offer.  Laughing

That said I am becoming something of a Seeburg expert, which will clearly useful is of no value here!

Digressing to the emoticons I Googled how to fix this and was informed to go into Internet Explorer tools, extensions, and activate the “my emoticons” field. I didn’t have one so I downloaded it and guess what? Yep, doesn’t make a bit of difference. I click on the emoticons and the box opens blank.

I hope I have better luck with the Seeburg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello esteemed Moderating Team:

No, the original question about why the emoticons work for some but not others has not been answered.

Søren kindly provided the two codes for smilies, which is nice; I can type them in and get the desired affect. But this is not the same as the emoticon field working, what I get, as do a few others is a black field.

Frankly, speaking only for myself, if the emoticon option never works again it is no big deal and in no way diminishes the REAL value of this forum.

Still, if a fix could be offered, it would be welcome.  (This is Søren’s shortcut) Big Smile

No, the original question about why the emoticons work for some but not others has not been answered.

The short, but comprehensive answer: because it works in some browser(version)s and doesn't work in some other browser(version)s.

If it worked for you earlier using the same browser version, it's difficult to tell. All we know for certain is that pretty much nothing has changed at the forum end for some years now. Any IT support person can testify that when you ask people whether something has changed on their computer or if they have changed something on their computer themselves, all of them first reply with a hearty "NO!" and in the majority of cases, the answer turns out to be "yes". I have no idea what could have changed the behaviour of the smilies popup for you. I'm not sure if you have tried clearing your browser cache already, but by all means try that as well.

There's very little that can be done at the forum end. As far as I understand, the software is basically unsupported and the source code for it is mostly unavailable. Lately, some new problems have surfaced with iOS 8 (in particular, the menu with the "edit" function doesn't work in mobile Safari). For piePad and piePhone users, I can heartily recommend Phillippe's great Beoworld app that is available for free in the App Store.

We could post some for you to copy/paste, Jeff. Laughing

Martin

How kind of you Martin. However I do see the smilies work for you…. maybe you have to be Danish.

Obviously this is not a priority issue, but that said, when a website offers a service or option, it should work. N’es pas?

Works for Mexicans, and Firefox, but on a laptop, seams like most problems are with pads and phones from the fruit company

Hi Mika,

As nothing has changed at the forum end, by default, the “change” must have occurred at this end.

What I was “hoping” for is something like, “Oh all you need to do is go into the control panel, select “X” and then enable the “X” and problem solved. “

I even went so far as to download the entire emoticon package, to no affect.

As I noted more than once, this was never a serious question….. if there was a simple solution, I would have welcomed it. But as there is not, time to move on, but thank you kindly for your response.

Besides Søren provided me with the code for this: Big Smile

Hey Rich and Søren,

I get it, something has changed, and God only know what, in my Internet Explorer. Laughing

I downloaded the darn emoticons and spent entirely too much time trying to find the issue here. Time to get back on my Seeburg M100B jukebox, which is a much more worthwhile project.

Hi Ralph –Marcus,

Old guys (like me) tend to be creatures of habit and not exactly welcoming to new ideas or technology. That said, the smilies as a bonus, the security feature is quite an inducement to make a change.

Thanks for the recommendation. Big Smile

Jeff

Seeburg M100B update.

With A-side unplayable and B-side barely OK at the start but crapping out at the end, time for the Seeburg Manual.

But before I got started I spotted that tiny screw I lost taking the Pickering Blackhead cartridge out and found it was lodged in the tonearm pivot point. AH ha, I found the problem. Nope, removed the errant screw and it made no difference.

Back to the manual. According to the manual the counterbalance should be set to neutral, it wasn’t. So how the Seeburg played at all is a mystery, but unimportant to the solution.

With the counterbalance set correctly both A-side and B-side greatly improved. (A-side wouldn’t play at all, so anything would have been an improvement!)

Still the sound wasn’t quite right so I took a look at the tonearm pivot point and the screw was in too tight causing a slight binding in the tonearm motion. Loosened the screw a bit and applied more lubrication and SOUND!

After months of labouring away at this jukebox I finally got it back to normal. This time around the “repair” was relatively straightforward and “easy” as compared to removing the mechanism for cleaning and lubrication and all the troubles that followed. Big Smile
