After 9 months of debating between the new Avant and the 11, I finally picked up a BV11-55. Thanks to those of you who provided opinions about this TV. It helped tremendously.

It replaces a 10-46 which has been moved to the bedroom (no more crappy Samsung audio, yeah!).
Unboxing the TV was easier than I thought, even though we had to be three to move it out to the styrofoam after I set up the easel stand and the brackets from STB.
My primary source is a Mac Mini running Plex, then a Sky Box, and occasionally some broadcast TV.
I was blown away the moment I turned it on (after a few hours spent in connections, doing “proper” cable management).
I was definitely expecting an improvement in picture, but not at this level.
My biggest disappointment with the 10 was the preset “film mode” which can not be disabled (I even tried several times to override it from the service menu, unsuccessfully). The TV is located in a bright living room, which was making watching content (especially from the Mac) almost impossible, especially during summer days where the amount of light in the evening is considerable.
With this TV, the Adaptive mode delivers, and I do not need to select the warmer “Movie” mode at night. The light sensor really works.
Smoothness is also something else. My content is mostly 24 or 25fps, and I can see a big difference between the 10 and the 11. To the point that sometimes I have to turn off Judder cancel, but I guess it’s just a matter of getting used to it.
The TV is hooked up to a pair of BL6002 which we had got with the BV10. I am not an audio expert, so while I’m aware those are not the best speakers out there, I really like their sound and design. I think the next purchase will be a subwoofer and a couple of BL18 (but I’m not too happy about getting two wireless receivers in order to move the 6002 and use them as surround speakers.. might see if I the 6002 have still some trade-in value).
Wows
  • Finally plenty of settings
  • Speaker groups
  • Improved software - no more lagging in switching channels or relaying the “OK” button to Sky
  • Surprisingly most of my content does not require transcoding, so I could get rid of the Mac Mini, but I favour Plex’s interface over the built-in Homemedia DLNA client
Soandso’s
  • The Beoremote One really takes time to get used to at nighttime
  • For some reason the software update of my UPC card gets stuck at 5% (but I can use another TV to update it)
The only trouble I had was with the Sky box, but was eventually fixed. Using the Beoremote resulted in erratic behaviour (only 1 keypress out of 5 was detected on average). After trying to replace the PUC cable, moving to a different socket, etc… it turns out that the Sky Box was stacked vertically next to an Airport Extreme base station. Somehow it interferes like crazy with IR signals, I was not aware of it.
Finally, I did not experience a troublesome amount of lag using my PS4 in Game mode.
So, while most or all the above is probably old news for many of you, I’m really happy about my purchase.
Now I only really need to figure out how to set up proper listening positions: center, left and right. I haven’t understood yet if I should compensate by lowering the dB of the near speaker or to raise the distant ones.
But I will be happy to experiment.

Marcello, congratulations on the new addition to your B&O family. It seems in the last few months there have been a handful of Beoworlders who have taken the plunge for the BV11(55). Me being one of them.

So, can you tell us what made you finally decide for the BV11 versus the Avant?

Your setup looks fantastic, and I'm not ashamed to say that your choice of the easel stand makes me smile.

It was only me and a friend (2 people total) with the setup, and frankly a third person would have made the easel stand set up much easier, because the styrofoam does tend to move with the television as you're trying to lift it up and out of the two base pieces in the box. And when you have to place the TV on TOP of the styrofoam to get the feet in, a third person REALLY would help stabilize and arrange the foam pieces so they don't move. My friend and I were a sweaty mess when we tried to manage -- but we did -- we ended up placing one foot at a time by switching sides.

You mentioned the adjustment for near and far speakers... apart from the dB adjustment, there's also the listening distance adjustment too.

I too am overwhelmed in a good way with all the settings available to the user.

Here's to wishing you years of enjoyment.

Sal:

A number of reasons are behind the decision.

The first is the design. The 10 and 11 are unique and I personally consider them the best looking TV sets on the market.
But regardless of the design, as a tech enthusiast I am fascinated by the 4K panel and the moving tech inside the Avant. Unfortunately, the intended location for the TV is not compatible with the huge stand of the Avant. Not only its footprint, but its height as well (since wall mounting is also impossible in my case). It would have been a more difficult decision, had B&O made a motorised floor stand like the one for the 11.

Also, the reported lag of the Avant when using a console was another factor (I enjoy a little weekly gaming session...)

I went to Italy to pick it up on Friday with a friend who kindly lent me his van - getting through customs is another story. I will just mention that the customs officer, in charge of signing the export documents, told me "Mr L, you are a European citizen and you NEED to have your ID with you when crossing the border... I had forgotten it at home.... Never happened in 16 years since I emigrated.

Anyway the idea was to have my electrician to help me set it up on the following day, since he was supposed to be around for some other work. But that would have meant leaving the "toy" in its box a whole night. Irresistible, I'm sure you can understand. So a few hours later, after setting up the stand and the brackets on the back, I summoned my wife and the maid to help me put the feet in place Big Smile

I am aware of those setting, those are the easy ones. Do you have external speakers? If yes, did you feel the need to raise the level of the built-in center speakers?

Here's to wishing you years of enjoyment.

Same to you, thanks!

Yes, I have a pair of Beolab 9's, whose level I did raise every so slightly (posted my adjustment and opinions on the BL9's in another thread). I have not raised the levels of the BV11 inbuilt speakers (yet) as they sound just fine to my unrefined ears.

Not that you were asking, but I have set up three speaker groups:

Default "TV" only the inbuilt BV 11 speakers (for normal routine TV watching)

"Movie 3.0" BL9's as Front L/R, with BV11 as Center

"Music 2.0" BL9's as L/R with the BV11 speakers off

I don't have any rear speakers (yet).

Big congrats.

Coming from BV10 you'll also be impressed by the dark level during night watching (or day watching in a dark room) and the bass level from a good video source and the benefit of easy Youtube or Deezer or Spotify access and Beoremote if you have permanent wifi and software updates or PUC codes at home and...

Indeed. I use Tron:Legacy as a benchmark for dark scenes (and for sound/music as well, amazing soundtrack) and the difference is unbelievable.

Having an Ethernet socket next to the TV, I decided against Wi-fi, even though I had to get a small switch because I had run out of ports on my router. Actually the Beoremote app is a good replacement for the One during night. I have not tried yet Spotify because I need to upgrade my account first (I have the unlimited one, not premium). Also, I was also not aware of Deezer, I heard about it when Moment was introduced, but I never tried the app. More new stuff to explore!

This is a pic of the back of the TV (when I mentioned proper cable management, I was talking about inside the TV, not outside...gotta find a way to solve the mess...)

Sensible speaker groups :-). Mine are similar.

Hi,

For my new 11-46 I have used a sound pressure level meter on my iPhone to get the dB levels on my listening position right. For the distances I have used my Bosch Laser distance measurer from the listening position.

For other adjustments I have used the THX tune-up app with my AppleTV.

I have created a 5.1 profile, a 2.1 profile and a TV only profile for night watching.

Cheers,

Frank

pressure level meter on my iPhone.

I've been told that the only right way to do that is with a analog db meter not digital

I have both and the outcome was almost identical!

Thank you Frank! I did not think about visiting the App store for this. I calibrated the speaker levels using the app and it worked really well! I think I have an old RadioShack (RIP) analogue meter at my parents place, I will give it a go out of curiosity when I get the chance.
