have been trying to find a fix for my mcp 6500 volume issue , everything elseworks fine on the panel with my BM 5500 , just the volume wheel isn't working .the amp works fine as ive checked it with another remote. Ive opened it up and cleaned the micro switch under the wheel but still isnt functioning . I was reading on here that it could be something 'optical' but can't find the post again - any clues?
If the MCP wakes up when you turn the wheel, but the wheel is otherwise inoperational, the fault is probably the opto sensor on the wheel. I think Dillen should have spares.
The microswitch tells the MCP which direction the wheel is being turned to (and also to wake up if it's off when the wheel is turned), but otherwise the movement is tracked by the optical sensor.

The opto switch may not be faulty. The orifice that it sits in may be full of accumulated dust and crap which has collected over the years,
The switch works by bouncing a light beam off of alternate black and white sections on the wheel, white reflects and black does not. If the light beam cannot get through the crap, the volume control will not work!
I have had 2 MCP's recently with this fault and they performed fine after a clean out.

is that on the underside of the wheel - the other side to the micro switch?
pcbailey: is that on the underside of the wheel - the other side to the micro switch?
No, on the outer circumference.
The opto sensor is soldered to the main board near the micro switch's connector. The black-and-white strip is on the wheel as seen here. When I cleaned mine, the stip (paper) was almost loose. After cleaning and re-glueing it, the volume wheel has worked like new.
found it - cleaned it - fixed it . works a treat - thanks guys for your input and remedy
