My recently acquired BC9000 shows a behaviour I would like to check is normal. After I have played or recorded a tape and then  press STOP, the motor keeps running with the spools disengaged and the tape not turning. Pressing STANDBY (or leaving for 30 mins) stops the motor. Is this normal behaviour?

Yes, this is normal! Many decks behave like that actually, not just Beocords.

Perfectly normal.
- Sadly, because it adds unnecessary running hours to the motor.
