Back on discussion, does anyone have a photo of the Playmaker - they do exist. My dealer was describing it to me earlier.

Yes they exist and I have seen a photo of it on a red background. Which is probably going to be used in advertising. However I don't have a copy of it but it looks just as I described it.

Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2,
BeoSound Core, BeoSound 9000, BeoSound Century,

Yes, I can confirm... i have the documentation with me.  Small device intended to be wall mounted. Has a mute/standby button and volume scroll wheel in front. Power supply, ethernet, line-in at back.  Compatible with Airplay & DLNA.  Can be controlled using Beo4 & Beo6 and also Beoplayer App, iTunes, Windows Media Player or other app for any IOS or Android device.

£350 per device... connects to 1 set of B&O speakers.

Does it also have a line out, so I can connect it to my beosound 4?

Yes, there is an option where you can set the volume to a fixed level, so the powerlink-output is your line out. I guess you need an optional cable from RJ45 to RCA/Minijack to connect to your Beosound or Beovision. There is also a line-in if you don't use DNLA or Airplay.

If you use an Airport Express now, solely to drive Beolabs, the Playmaker is a must-have device because of the better DAC. Nice!

Just an observation, according to the spec on the Bang Olufsen page for the Playmaker, it does not support WMA lossless... Which makes me wonder how useful it would be for BS5/BM5 where it is recommended to ripp into WMA lossless (which I have done)???

Why would you use the Playmaker if you have a BS5?

That will work, because bm5 is d lna server.  You would use an app on your phone to play music from bm5 on the playmaker.

If you want to sync both rooms (same music at same time) you would need ml between them.  Personally, having made the investment in a bm5 I would run the ml and get a beo 6.  Playmaker is aimed more at people looking for a cheap way into band o, and wouldn't give you the best return on the investment you have already made in the bm 5

I already use ML, but would prefer having it independent of what is playing in the main room

Then a playmaker will work.

A bs5 encore would be a lot more elegant and user friendly though

Not really, since in the specs it says it does not support WMA lossless!

(So I have to stick with using my dlna app on my HTC, which controls the main room BS5/BM5 which I then access in link room using link a aux.)

PAULW REPLY TO STEFFEN

Some of us talk about Apple Steffen, simply because a lot of the BeoPlay products feature Airplay and are designed for Apple products and the Apple customer! Put it this way, BeoPlay is the name that is getting BANG&OLUFSEN noticed.  Look what happened when B&O ignored Apple before, a history of severe dept and many CEOs that probably ended up working in MacDonalds!

How degrading a few years ago when BANG&OLUFSEN shared its name with SAMSUNG on a mobile phone! When a prestigious company does this, it's desperate. Now B&O has never had it so good! And in todays and next years and the the following years recession, it's the Apple customers AND BeoPlay that will keep BANG&OLUFSEN alive!!!   Remember Steffen, without Apple customers buying into the brand, you probably wouldn't have a BANG&OLUFSEN now and I think it is pretty clear that TUES MONTANI realises this!!!!!!! So go and play on your Windows laptop you little boy!

No - too much work to do it manually.

But I'll give you this nice address - http://www.happpy.it - which will allow you to turn everything into Comic Sans.

Big Smile

On a more serious note, we do not wish to see posts as the ones posted (and quoted) in this thread on BeoWorld. I'll refrain from expressing my own thoughts on where these kind of discussions belong, and just hope that threads that mention Apple would not degenerate into mindless flaming that have nothing to do with B&O.

Butch1, I'm sure that you will find that the BeoPlay range will financially save BANG&OLUFSEN.

BANG&OLUFSEN have been 'bailed' out so many times due to short sightedness of the company. Design and performance wise, Apple certainly seem to have created far less lemons over the years than over expensive BANG&OLUFSEN so definitely speaking from experience, not all BANG&OLUFSEN products are even half decent.

Highly amusing rant by you however, being a professional, I'll just laugh it off!

In the late 90's when Apple had made some wrong decisions - as far as I remeber - it was Bill - the Evil who bailed out
Steve - the Messias.  From a today's point of view this could considered to be "short sightedness" by Bill.

@capital letter brigade

Millions of peope have died for the "TRUTH" - whatever this may be ...

So, let's get serious and back on the topic :

I picked a Playmaker "from my stores shelf" this noon.

Compared to the AE/DAC config I've been using till today, I can report the Playmaker offers some
- at least for me - important advantages over the AE/DAC.

Excellent sound - if compared to the AE analogue output
- but I don't consider this a big advantage over my previously used AE/DAC combo.

- A lot less cables.

If I can't access the iDevice comfortably (e.g.during charging in the dock):

- Volume/Mute control manually and via Beo4/6
- Change of track via B&O remote

After playback finishes - compared to my previously used AE/DAC combo:

- No digital hiss - the speakers automatically mute/turn off via PowerLink

And finally, not mentioned in the user guide and found just by accident Whistle:

- Sound adjustments similar to BeoLink Active via "A.Setup" of your remote.

.Paul w you say you are speaking from experience regarding your comments. What do you mean by that?.I have a house full of apple products, but I am on a B&O forum were we discuss b&O,fair enough its relevant to some of the products like airplay etc.clever marketing and advertising has got apple were they are,not design and built quality like b&O.

My rant was due to your reply to steffen about playing on his windows laptop.I understand forums are for enthusiasts and you clearly love apple, more than b&o.I love watches and cars, but I go onto the relevant forums to discuss them.

That's just an objective view. A lot of users - and remember I own a lot of B&O kit - say it looks dated, a bit 90s and, to be fair, they have a point. I'd argue there a few better designs than the new retina MacBook Pro - the way they've crafted the components in to that thin chassis, the way they've created that screen, the build quality and the fact it runs much cooler than previous MBPs.

Just because we own B&O, it doesn't mean that we should all be (falsely) excited about B&O and diss other products. As I said in another forum, there's a fine line between fanaticism and realism and a lot of users fall in to the first category and get quite heated by any "negativity" whatsoever. I do find it rather ironic that, to be able to afford B&O products, Beoworld users will have been more successful in life, than most users, yet somehow get suckered in to childish playground-style arguments at times, like they've been somehow cornered by a group of anti-B&O bullies, in their own forum :)

The big problem is that B&O have lost its visionary designer, David Lewis. He designed amazing products where the user was part of a spectacle. Now young designers come to B&O and design something to be trendy or look cool. Nothing else.

I think this is a big problem but I can't say for sure. It just feels like the new products don't feel magical as they used to do.

And how many products do they now have on the market? Too many I think.
