Greetings to you all from South London.

I've taken my Beogram 8000 out of (dry) storage after a year or two and have a problem which I would value your help with.

I replaced the tachodisc some time ago, but haven't used the deck very much, as I'd started using my 4000 while working on the 8000. Now, when I darted up the 8000, I was pleased to find that it seemed to work; the pickup arm was a little reluctant to move at first, but I 'exercised' it each way with the < & > buttons and it moved well. Now, it will play the first few seconds of a record, or a few seconds of any part of the side, but the arm doesn't 'track'; it deviates towards the detector arm (with the light), and play ceases.

The arm drive motor is clearly working, so I presume that it is not receiving instructions to track the record.

The detector has a working light, which is as bright as I remember it used to be.

The Photo Control under the base of the arm also lights up (I remember adjusting the shutter previously).

I've looked through previous posts on this forum, but haven't found any threads which help.

Does anyone with experience of this problem have any wise words to suggest where I should start, to get this turntable working again?

Thank you.

It sounds like the tracking sensor is either not working or is out of adjustment. You said the tracking sensor lamp isn't burned out, right? A quick way to verify this is to lower the tonearm without the platter installed (so the arm just lowers into empty space). While the arm is down you can nudge it towards the center of the turntable like it would go when playing a record. The tonearm servo should move the transport to catch up with the new position. Section 5-3 of the service manual describes how to perform the adjustment procedure. I do it with the P4 connector off so the platter doesn't run (I rotate the platter by hand).

If it never moves then you will have to open up the tracking sensor assembly and see what the problem is. Reference this thread for more information.

Thanks. Nudging the arm does nothing, so I thought that it must be either the sensor circuit, or the 'brain' which sends instruction to the motor.

I'll look at the thread you sent - thanks.
