As the owner of a Beogram 5000 turntable I have always thought about upgrading to a 5500 tangential turntable but was unsure as to whether it plays better than the simple radial arm. Any help would be appreciated before I spend the money.

Hi and welcome to Beoworld.

I'm not so sure it is an 'upgrade'.

There are a number of members who would argue that the 5000 is a better deck.  Whilst theoretically a tangential arm offers benefits in that it plays the record in the same way it was cut and removes factors  like end of side distortion, the 5000 was arguably better engineered than the Beogram 5005/5500/6500/7000 series that followed.  I do know of at least two of the older members of this site who upgraded at the time of the introduction of the tangential armed 5005 and subsequently went back to the 5000.

That's not to say the 5500 and the subsequent models aren't good decks  - I have a 6500 myself - but if I were looking for a system based around the Beomaster 5000, I would certainly be looking for a Beogram 5000 rather than a tangential.

Thanks, the 5000 does play very well, it has a slight glitch in that when you press play it doesn't automatically drop onto the record but does if you press cue. Minor thing so not really serious to warrant a new deck.

Sonically, the 5000 would seem to be better. From a convenience point of view, a tangential deck allows basic remote control of the arm. Not that useful but might be a deciding factor. The theoretical advantages of the tangential arm are real but outweighed by the more robust construction of the radial model.

I suppose as I have a decent 5000 then I think I'll stick with it for the time being, I don't tend to use the remote anyway, but I always liked the look of the tangential which is down the list of priorities.

In my opinion, the 5000 is a much better deck, in terms of sound. I still fail to understand why the later linear tracking versions command such a price premium over the likes of the Beogram 1800/2000/5000/RX2.

I too am in favor of the BG 5000, I have the 5000, BG 4002 and TX2, the 5000 and the 4002 are compatible sound vise and both very good build, the TX2 flimsy build but nearly as good sound vise as the other 2, 5000 and TX2 tested with MMC2 from Axel. 4002 with used MMC20EN

All 3 BGs are cleaned, lubricated, restored and adjusted according to manual
