My white Beogram 5500 obtained only yesterday has a problem; after pressing 'turn' or 'play', the deck turned on for a few seconds, but then clicked back to standby...

I understood from reading older threads that this is in fact what should happen without a record on the deck, so today I bought a vinyl album and a 45' single from a local charity shop, hoping this would cure the problem - but no luck unfortunately!

Lifting the platter, I could see that the white carriage drive-string was tangled up in the mechanism, as the plastic guide pin appears to have snapped off.  I unscrewed the deck's screws and tilted up the deck for slightly better access, but before puling out the long pin on the left-hand side - which I presume is a hinge-pin? - and fiddling around inside to reconnect the drive-string, (possibly causing more damage in the process...), I wondered if this is actually related to the primary problem anyway?

In other words, if re-attaching the drive-string isn't likely to solve the problem of the deck stopping after a few seconds and I need an engineer anyway, I figure I may as well save myself the trouble of dismantling the deck and let him or her re-attach the drive string when they have the deck opened up themselves...

So, can anyone advise if the carriage drive-string being disconnected is likely to cause the deck to stop turning after a few seconds?  If so, I have the service manual to help with the re-attachment of the drive-string, and I understand from earlier threads that a small bolt can be used to replace the broken plastic pin.  If the problem is deeper or too complex for me to fix, I'll leave all of this to a service engineer who knows what they are doing.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

J

Post went to moderation for some reason...

Forgot to mention that I don't have a stylus on the mmc-4 ; I appreciate that this wouldn't stop the deck turning, but it might change the advice given re. getting one before attempting to line up the carriage etc.

Thanks again for any comments/feedback.
