So I'm somewhat familiar with B&O, but there is a lot that I don't know. I own two BeoGram Turntables (1602 and RX2), and a pair of BeoVox S45 speakers.

Recently I found a BeoMaster 5500 for sale, and I'm very interested in it. I know all about the DIN plugs for the speaker connections and the other B&O devices. My question is: Do I need the Master Control Panel or the Beolink 1000 to operate the receiver?

Both will work in everyday use, but only the MCP will handle all functions.

Agree - the 5500 has very few controls and the MCP basically provides them. The 1000 will do quite a lot but to get the most, get an MCP.

I use a 5500 with my computer - lots of inputs, both DIN and RCA - very useful.
