Hello Beoworld members,

my BG 4500 worked well until last weekend Smile. Then some issues showed up Angry

When I started the turntable, the tone arm went to the record, turned down and started playing. A grinding sound appeared, like something touching the platter or the sliding chassis, distorting the music now and then.

Skipping forward, after appr. 1 cm the sound disappeared, the record playing as usual. I let it play. After the record ended, the tone arm was lifted and moved back, but stopped after some cm´s and did not move any more Crying.

Today I opened the turntable and found the following:

1. The sliding chassis with the tone arm bumped against the corner of the turntable chassis, please see the following picture:

When I lifted the turntable chassis a bit, the sliding chassis went sliding up and down manually in a normal way. Once it was pushed towards the center and went over the edge of the turntable chassis, it bounced a little upwards and then, on its way back, bumped again against the turntable chassis.

By adjusting the screws for the turntable height I tried to lower the floating chassis on which the sliding chassis with the tone arm is mounted. This did the job but brought of course the platter and the tone arm in a closer relation and is obviously not a proper solution.

2. Trying to put everything back in place, I realized, that the sliding chassis being pushed towards the starting position, stopped appr. 1 cm before fully returning to the home position.

Inside view:

Outside view:

I could carefully overcome the drag. Pushing it outside, with a "click" the sliding chassis returned into complete home position. But now it could only be pushed into the opposite direction by forcing it again over the drag. The reason for this "drag" is shown in the next picture:

It seems that the nose on the pulley complete (p# 1636) bumps against the front of the arm for cueing (p# 1612).  In my memory the sliding chassis should move freely up and down the whole way, right?

So, I have at least two problems to solve with my BG 4500:

- The bumping against the turntable chassis, and

- the drag on the way of the sliding chassis

Now I tried to play a record. When the tone arm started in the home position, it studdered and did not work. When the tone arm started after the drag, the record was playing normally, but with a late set-down of the tone arm, not stopping at the end of the record (the whole way of the tone arm seems to be shifted by appr. 1 cm towards the center). When I pressed "stop", the sliding chassis with the tone arm moved back and again bumped against the turntable chassis and stopped, not moving fully backwards LightningLightningLightning.

Looking in the service manual, I thought it might have to do with the tone arm set-down adjustment. But before adjusting any thing in this sensible area, not knowing where the issues are coming from, I would like to ask for your expertise and advice. Please give me your hints and comments what to do next, to fix it the right way for proper operation.

A big thank you in advance!
