Hello, I recently changed out my Beovision 4-42 for a 4-65 type 9099. I tried connecting it to the Beosytem 1 using the connections I had hooked up to the BV 4-42. I had to get a DVD-D to VGA adapter and a serial gender reversing adapter. I hooked up the main VGA from the BS-1 to the DVI-D using an adapter. The Serial hooked up to the Serial and the PC IN VGA hooked up to the PC VGA on the BV4-65. The screen started right up meaning that the serial with adapter worked fine. But nothing showed on the screen. I switched the VGA that went to the DVI-D adapter and hooked it up to the PC In and the screen turned on perfectly. But now I can't switch sources because I believe I need to go through the DVI-D port on the BV4-65. Has anyone had similar problems or know of any solutions? Thanks in advance.

The Beosystem 1 only as an analog VGA output (it dates back to the late 90s). The Beovision 4-65 does have a DVI-D connection, but that could only be used with a Beosystem 3 (and maybe a Beosystem 4). The Beovision 4-65 should also have an analog VGA input; this is the input you would use to connect to the VGA out of the Beosystem 1.
Further, note that to work with the Beovision 4-65, the Beosystem 1 would need to be of a certain minimum software level, and would have to have the proper setting in the "secret" service menu. In addition to the the VGA connection, you need a control connection between the Beosystem 1 and the Beovision 4-65; the cable of which is USB-B on the Beosystem 1 side and a DB9 RS232 connection on the Beovision 4-65 side.
Note that the Beosystem 1 only has a single 1080I (not 1080P or 720P) analog component input. this can be expanded to additional 1080I (not 1080P or 720P) analog component inputs using a Zektor component switcher (if you can find one...I probably have an extra). There are devices out there that can convert HDMI to an 1080I analog component signal (see https://www.hdfury.com).
All that said, the Beosystem 1 is a rather large dated box originally designed for the US market CRT Avant, that while fantastic for its time, is probably best replaced. On the audio front, note that it lacks any type of base management. I would encourage you to at least consider a Beosystem 3, which would provide a reasonably modern inference and user experience. Also, while I'm not sure if a Beosystem 4 would be compatible, but it combined with a Beovision 4-65 would give you an superb modern TV experience.
Thank you Beophile! I do have the Beosystem 1 with the most updated software and the zektor switch hooked up to STB,DVD, Etc.
1) Do you know if the DVI-D from the TV can have a DVI-D to VGA adapter used to hook up to Beosystem 1? It looks like hooking up the VGA from PC on the TV to the BS1 allows the STB to work but does not change the commands of the zektor/BS1 to go to other sources like DVD,etc. Maybe the "secret" menu has to be changed for command through the PC VGA input?
2) The control connection between the BS1 and BV4-65 is hooked up and works great to turn on TV to STB source (not sure if this is maybe not allowing it to change sources?). Thank you for the recommendations on converting to HDMI!
3) I am looking into upgrading to the Beosystem 3 in the next few months. Waiting on something that is within my budget.
Thanks!
There used to be an Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that B&O had that indicated which code to use in the “secret menu” for which external display. Maybe they still have it (I might have an old copy, but I’ll have to check); it might be worth contacting Beocare to find out. To get into the “secret menu”, first press menu on the Beo4 to get into the regular menu, then press “0”, “0”, and then “go”. I wouldn’t go about making any changes in the “secret menu”, but this is where you’ll find the submenu where the code for the external display is changed. My understanding is that all the different codes did, was appropriately tell the Beovision 4 which input/slot to use.
I’m not super familiar with the Beovision 4-65 since I had (still have) and older 720P Beovision 4-50. Also, there are different versions of the Beovision 4-65. I would look at all the connections on the bottom of the Beovision 4-65 to see if there is an analog VGA connection. If there is, use that. If there isn’t, then I suppose its possible yours doesn’t have the card for it installed (maybe it was one of the later units only envisioned to be used with a Beosystem 3). The Beovision 4s were essentially industrial Panasonic plasmas in fancy clothes (and that’s not a bad thing). Those plasmas had a number of slots into which various cards were inserted for various types of connections, such as VGA, DVI, etc. It sounds link yours is fitted with only a DVI card. I don’t believe the DVI card can accept analog VGA. Thus, I think you might need to find an analog VGA card for your Beovision 4 (and insert it in the correct slot, which is the slot corresponding to the input that is proper based on the code used in the “secret menu”).
If you like, PM me your number and we can chat about your setup.
Thank you! I got the other sources to work. The only one I can't get to work is the PC in because it's used to go into the BS1. I have the computer going through the DVI but need to find out what source on the BS1 to tell it to go through. I appreciate all of the help. The next step is purchasing a beosystem 3 for the BV4-65 to upgrade to HDMI sources and put the old BS1 in another bedroom with the BV4-42.
So I ended up getting a Type 9606 BeoSystem 3. The Audio/Video is a HUGE step up from the BS1. I think I need to get the PUC codes updated to work with my Comcast X1 STB (only has directv boxes, a couple others and apple remote) but all else looks and sounds great. A few interesting questions I have:
1) The first time I shutoff the power the BV4-65 had a little bar that popped down from the top of the screen, waited 15 seconds and went back up. What was that?
2) The PC connection always has the video set to 4:3 instead of widescreen 16:9. Anyone know how I can always have the PC source (goes through VGA) automatically set to 16:9 widescreen?
3) Has anyone had luck controlling a raspberry pi 3 with retopie and kodi?
Any other recommendations would be great! Thanks!
Hey guys, I know this thread has been dormant for a while, but I have a similar situation with a BV4-65 and a Beosystem 1. I will have the BV4-65, the BS-1, Beo4, and the IR eye. Do you have any suggestions on some cables to order to get the Beosystem to properly control the BV4? The BV4 was originally controlled by a Beosystem 3, but one of those is just too far out of my budget right now. Thanks for your help!!

If you can get your hands on a Panasonic TV remote, you can use that to change the TV input on the BeoVision 4 by finding the right angle to point it under the bezel. Once you change the BeoVision 4 input, it will retain that input.
I can also attest that an HD Fury can be used to connect a BeoSystem 3 to a BeoVision 4's VGA input if the BeoVision 4 lacks the DVI module. It works for me.
The BV 4-65 I have has the DVI-D input. Is this the cable adapter I would need to properly connect the Beosystem 1 to the BV4?
