Took delivery of BL90 y'day and deeply impressed but having a few frustrating problems and wondered if someone here can help or if Geoff reads this then his advice...

1. I have got hold of a reliable QED toslink optical cable, plugged it into the Core and the Master BL90 and gone into settings on BL90 app and placed it at highest priority on the input selection list, above pwerlink as advised in the white paper written by Geoff but it doesn’t play any music no matter what the source selection.

2. The Core keeps crashing and the app says Core unreachable. The volume gets stuck and the Core app stops communicating with the Core leaving me no option but to pull the power cable to the Core and reset it after which things work fine for a 10 mins or so before it goes back to not working. Is there a fault with this unit?

I would say this is likely a Core functionality issue?

i drive my Oppo 203 to BL90 via TOS and that seems to work. They are all connected via Cat7 Lan (Avant, Oppo, BL90)  and HDMI between the Avant and Oppo so a lot of other stuff could be going on I can't see making the connection).

The Oppo is very easy to configure via On-screen whereas I can see the Core may be difficult curtesy of dumb-down B&O configuration tools.

Unfortunately, I'm away from my system so I can't check through all my settings to see if something is missed.

Maybe try a computer with digital out if you have one? Sound mostly like an issue with the core to me, i hope you'll be able to fix it soon and enjoy those beauties :)

I am amazed that someone can spend over £50K on speakers and then have to resort to a forum to resolve a technical problem! Wink

I was hoping your reply would be a pearl of wisdom and advice but instead it was a disappointing and cheap dig/veiled criticism. I won't start hypothesising as to what your unconscious motivation behind that comment was.

Firstly, the speakers cost me a lost less than £50k but even if they had cost many multiples it wouldnt matter or be of regard.

Secondly, the newer network linked B&O equipment like a lot of new network linked or network controlled euipment is a bit more complicated to set up and get right. Of course we all wish it was as simple as plugging a turntable into an amp and off you go but it isn't. The internet and streamed music has changed that.

Thirdly, the white paper (written by Geoff and colleagues) alludes a TOSLINK connection to transmit digital music stream to the BL90 with a parallel powerlink for volume control but that doesn't appear to be the case for the Beosound Core from what my dealer has discovered after speaking with Technical. Whether this will be a future update we can only hope. For now, the answer seems to need IR control of the volume if I insist/prefer to use TOSLINK rathe than an analogue powerlink which isn't unreasonable with a speaker of this calibre. My dealer is kindly sending me an IR kit for free for me to try. The BL90 is a very complicated piece of gear and like any complicated gear, the answers aren't easily forthcoming or the experience isn't always there with your avergae dealer who often uses a very simple plug and play setup. It's not fault of their's as they use an analogue powerlink connection. They contacted Technical within 24 horus of the install and got back to me. Good customer service and excellent post-sale support i'd say.

The Core has now settled down and seems to not freeze or crash after i reinstalled all the software and re-powered the BL90.

Hopefully a solution to lack of volume over TOSLINK between Core and BL90 can be resolved soon.

Good progress being made. In the mean time i am absolutely humbled and bewildered with how beautiful and clear all my familiar music sounds. I can now hear background details in the tracks i've never ever heard before whether it be on my SURE in-ear monitors or using more expensive studio monitors. It is a terrifyingly good product and i'm glad i spent the last 4 years saving even before their release when all i had to go on was faint rumours through various dealers who had heard that B&O were working on something very special. This is a very special speaker and then some.

I guess you are already aware, but just in case....

'in order for this option to function properly, the S/P-DIF input must be assigned a higher priority than the Power Link input in the Selection Priority.'

But - which kind of 'IR kit' is it, that your dealer wants to send to you?

I am not aware of a possibility to control the BS Core (in this case the volume of the PL-out of it) via ir - only way, I know of is via the bluetooth 'wheelie'.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Gosh I wasn't expecting that!  It was simply meant to be a witty comment/observation for the amusement of our readers.  I couldn't give a toss about TOSLINK (geddit? Wink) or how much your speakers cost!

However you are clearly offended, hence I apologise unreservedly for my flippant remark.  I wish you the very best of luck with your new speakers, and many hours of listening enjoyment.

Have a great weekend - can I stand my lawyers down now? Wink

I would not take it personally. This site like many I visit can polarise people usually because the large sums of money parted for goods. There are those that expect flawless, the best for the money, every socket connected, every function deliverable and then there are those who are more tolerant in the face of beauty, elegance, the man-hours of work etc.. and that it will be fixed to satisfaction.

As an early adopter of the BL90, I found they were superb out of the box thinking very little would improve them. The user-defined ARC was not available for 11 months after release. B&O actually send a man from Struer to calibrate mine mine within a couple of months. They improved and improved.

From my basic setup, everything works as it should and I've not changed anything since calibrating with the app and mic months ago. Apart from party-tricking the Omni/wide/narrow thing (which is slight and subtle with increasing detail and image) that's it. Serious gear, not a toy.

i think your lawyers can stand down for the weekend and knock the meter into standby but both STY and myself will be watching very carefully in case we need to go all class-action. )p
