Connecting my Beolab 8000 speakers to a non B&O TV

Hi There,

I have a pair of Beolab 8000 speakers that i would like to connect to my pioneer Elite TV. I tried to connect them using some standard RCA cables - going from TV audio outputs to the 'line' output on the speakers. Good news and Bad News. The good news is the speakers worked. The bad news is that the volume was at full capacity and almost blew my house down! The remote I have for the TV did not affect the speaker volume. 

 

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work?

Hi honeydubrovsky,

Welcome to Beoworld!  The only way to connect the speakers directly to your TV is to use the headphone socket on the TV, as this is the only socket where the volume of the sound can be controlled.  You can connect a pair of Beolab 8000 speakers to the headphone socket of your TV using this cable:-

Please set both speakers to "Line" mode using the small switch next to the input sockets.

If the TV doesn't have a headphone socket, please let us know, as there is an alternative option using the optical output of the TV by adding a Beoplay S8 Connection Hub (£149 GBP from your local B&O dealer) to allow the speakers to be connected.  Please ask if you would like more details of how to connect the speakers via the Connection Hub.

Hi Steve, with this solution the Beolab 8000 will always be on (green light). Is that correct?

Hi,

Please set the speakers to Line mode (lowest switch position), they will then turn on when the sound plays and stay on until 3 minutes after the sound has stopped.

Hi Steve,

 

I currently have this solution with Beolab 8000 MK2 connected to my headphone socket by line. However, I am experiencing a bit of background noise and as i turn off my TV, the speakers will turn on and off every now and then even though there is no signal. In my line switch there seems to be a L, middle and R. I have set them both on the lowest (R), but would it not make sense that it is left and right, and therefore could be adjusted accordingly?

 

In addition, I have a very cheap cable. Do you think it will filter out background noise and help the speakers detect the signal correctly if I upgraded?

Hi Christian,

Please set both speakers to Line (lowest switch position) when used with a non-B&O device.  Some TVs are electrically noisy, changing the cable won't help this - you can test the connection by plugging an iPod or phone into the speakers instead, as this should work without noise.

Hi Steve,

 

Thank you for getting back to me so soon!

 

I made sure that both were on "line". There is no noise from phone, so must be from TV. However, when the TV is switched off, the speakers keep turning on and off as if I had turned on the TV. Is there any way to correct this?

 

And as for the background noise - would it make sense to buy a filter like this to install? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cablefinder-Phono-Ground-Loop-Isolator/dp/B007545XWE

Hi Christian,

Filters won't help, they usually make things worse.  Did you test the cable and speaker with a phone or iPod please?  This will tell you if the TV is the cause of the noise and power issues.

Hi Steve,

I did try testing the cable and speaker with my iPhone and there was no significant background noise. Seems like the TV is the issue. Is there anything I can do?

Hi Christian,

Yes, this is an issue with the TV causing the noise.  The only options are:-

1) Connect a music system between the TV and the speakers - this lets you set the TV volume to maximum and adjust the volume via the music system to reduce the relative level of the noise),

2) Connect a B&O Connection Hub or Core between the TV optical socket and the speakers to remove the noise, or

3) Replace the TV.

Hope this helps.  Converters or filters won't usually give any benefit here, which is why I haven't suggested them.
