Hi
I recently moved houses, and the platter of the BEOCENTER 5000 I’ve had for 12 years is warping.
I might not have been so gentle in the moving … this time.  :s
I found out about transport screws on this forum, but the damage is done I think ...
So,
When I press ‘turn', take a close look, and indeed: there is a 1 to 2 mm tolerance between the platter and the casing.
I also hear a routine short soft drag sound with every orbit, coming from centre to 12 O’clock (if you see the platter as a clock)
Any tips on how I can fix this!
Thanks

Can you tell if it's "just" the platter or also the subplatter?

In some decks, a second serialnumber label has been placed on the chassis under the platter, it can losen at corners and scrape on the
underside of the platter.
Lift off the platter and check.

Hi Dillen,

Thanks for your reply!

Whether it is also the subplatter, I can't tell. How do I find the subplatter, and how can I see its warp, if any...

Regarding the serialnumber label, would that explain the dragging sound?

I tried to get a hold on the platter to remove it, but it's very very tight. I see the stylis and arm moving along with my movements. I'm afraid break things.

How to remove the platter of a beocenter 5000?

Thanks,

Mickey

The platter will bind a bit to the subplatter, but it lifts right off.

Dear Martin,

Best wishes for 2018!

I had some time and was able to undo the topplatter.

It's clear that the belt needs to be replaced. It's worn out: I can see break-lines in the rubber, and even has two ripped parts. I'm surprised the belt did not break, while taking it out.

  1. Do you know where I can get a replacement belt for my Beocenter 5000 ?
  2. Would the worn out belt cause the warping?

The dragging sound comes from under the subplatter. Does that lift right of as well?

Thank you!

Michael

The subplatter won't lift off - but it will typically produce a faint scraping sound if rotated without a record on - because of the record sensing system.
It should not scrape with a record on the platter.

With the belt off, rotate the platter by hand and see if the warping continues.

I can supply correct belts for your Beocenter. Email or PM me.

Dear Martin,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've done what you proposed, and the subplatter is very stable. I've unscrewed all 3 the transport screws untill loose position. Two of them were already in that state, the third is now as well. I remounted the topplatter to check result, and its better. The tolerance is very little to none, and it is not in repeated on avery orbit any more. I made a recording of my beocenter playing Brahms "intermezzo op 117 nr 1" on Piano. As you can hear, I think its the age of the belt that creates the warping sound. What do you think?

ps: You'll also hear an old record playing!

As for the minor dragging / scraping sound, indeed! when the record is on the platter, it's gone Big Smile

Thank you,

Michael

That could be the belt slipping.
Is your kitchen on fire in the background?
