This seems a really basic question so I'm sorry, I'm surprised I couldn't find an answer in the Search thing!

The DIN connector on the back of the BeoSound Century, is that a proprietary B&O connector or a standard thing with a name? I was going to go an get a turntable for it today (I asked about that in a previous thread) and I checked round the back of the Century to check and discovered it was one of the B&O 7-pin things rather than normal stereo or phono input.

I looked in my cables box and surprisingly I don't have a cable for that, although I did have a 3.5mm to (only) 5-pin thing that I must have gotten somewhere along the line. Anyway, I attached that to my mp3 player and plugged it into the bak of the century to see if it would work, no success.

Do I need to go and get a cable online first or is this something a hifi place would have in stock if I asked for it by name? Or is an mp3 output just too low and the AUX input is designed for bigger things or just B&O things?

I'm not sure if any hifi shops would have any DIN to 3.5mm in stock but I got a cable from eBay (seller was beo_kev - he's super friendly and should be able to help you find the right one).

Strangely the cable he recommended was a 5-pin DIN one like yours and it works perfectly on my Century so maybe the cable you have is damaged?

Output wise, an MP3 player should be fine - I've used my Century with an iPad and iPhone via the AUX input fine :)

About 20 minutes after posting that I remembered that

  1. I bought the Century from LifeStyle AV as a Christmas gift to myself, back in 2008 or thereabouts.
  2. I can't think of where that cable would have come from apart from B&O or perhaps on here

I just tried again and it turns out that it DID work but I had to turn the volume up to 66 to be reasonable. Normally the Radio would be on 30

I'm guessing it's just because it's a longish cable (4 meters or thereabouts) and my iPhone7 (what I was using) is a lower power source because your ears are quite close to your pocket.

I'm guessing I just need to see if I can get something with a lot of gain.

What was the volume on your iphone set to?

Aha, my phone also seems to set to 'mid volume' when I plug that in. Still, I had to push it up to 44 to get an appropriate volume which I vaguely remember having to do with my old 5500 system (turn up the volume).

This whole thing makes me sound very silly indeed. But if you aren't actively collecting or working in the industry, you go years without having to play with cables and when you do it's like traveling overseas and trying to re-remember how to speak the language!
