Hallo to everybody

I was completing my masterlink connection homework. Thanks to the support I received in the forum, I  sorted out my problems with the audio part. Now I have some small issues with the video distribution.

My Video Master is a BEOVISON 8-40  and I would like to get the video  on my AVANT 28.

The plan is to bring the RF OUT of the BV8 to the SWITCH Matrix of the satellite that has a Terrestrial input and in this way to distribute the signal over the entire house.  Unfortunately during the apartment refurbishment  the additional coax I had requested was forgotten. My plan B is to use my CAT 7  wiring as replacement for the COAX ( I found some BALUN up to 900 MHz bandwidth).  Before investing on that  ( and potentially also on same signal amplifier) , I was willing to test  the concept with direct connection of the RF out of the BV8 to the TV input  of the AVANT.

I have to admit that  the first tentative was not successful ( I have some doubt on the cable I used as it may be 50 Ohm instead of 75) but  also I am not sure if the RF out will provide a signal strong enough for the TV input.

In addition ( due to the room set up ) it is very difficult to identify the correct  input on the AVANT. ( I have to plug the connector trusting my hand )

I do not use the TV input since a while ( only sat receiver) and I have two  connector close to each other . I  had assumed that the FEMALE is the TV and the male is the RF OUT of the AVANT.

Any suggestion is extremely welcomed.

Regards

did you set up the "broadcast" frequency on the BV8-40, and did you then tune the Avant (or the in-between unit) to that frequency ?

Hi Elephant

I did all the aspects related to the BV8 as you indicated , the RF OUT was on AUTO and I changed to ON.

On the AVANT I was just scanning the TV as there are no other signal being transmitted ( I do not use cable TV  or DVB-T).

The cable I used is a 50 Ohm  coax that I have around ( ~30 m),  sue to the impedance mismatch there is an additional loss but  should not be a dramatic one.   I was also assuming that the connector to be used on the avant ( due to its position is hard to see on the back) is the Female one .

I was not able to see any signal around  599 Mhz.

I may try with another TV ( not B&O)  to double check.

Regards

Hi - I am electrically inept so I can't comment on the coax cables ... but I do believe that you have to trigger the BV8-40 to start "broadcasting", did you fire a Beo4 command at the Avant for a source that was on the BV8 ?

No actually I did  not try  to trigger a command via   ML.

I had read that with the modulator ON it was always broadcasting, while in AUTO mode it was doing if the command was received.

I will try again sending the specific command.

Do you know if the signal level is sufficient for being seen by the AVANT TV tuner without  an amplifier ?

Hi alfio,

Are you sure that your Avant uses the signal at 599 Mhz? I have a MX4002 as LinkTV, and I can only make it see my MasterTV (also a BeoVision8-40), if I set the link frequency to 615 Mhz.

You know that you have to press 'LINK' before pressing TV of DTV on the LinkTV?

Could you draw your B&O setup on a piece of paper or on your computer, and add it to this topic, so we can see how you've set it up. Might be easier to see where the problem is. :-)

As I mentioned I was not so much sure about the fine tuning of the LINK and its frequency, I was more interested in checking the quality of the Video signal ( as I assumed my main problem being the Coax connection ).

I may have made some assumptions not necessarily correct:

  1. That the broadcasting is continuous if the modulator is on ON instead of AUTO
  2. That scanning with the TV tuning I would be able to see the broadcast ( no other signal is present on the cable beside the output of the RF modulator of BV8 40)
  3. That the level of the signal was high enough to be detected by the AVANT TV receiver
  4. That using a 50 Ohm cable (DATA) instead of  75 OHM video would not have a too much detrimental loo in the signal.

I include the wiring schema

I had the impression you could detect no signal -- the sentence above implies you were able to detect some form of inferior signal - is that correct ?

I have included your schematic below as an image (clicking on it will show it in a separate window) ... you have a very nice set-up !

I hope we can get it working for you :-)

You are right , I did not detect any signal ( not even   a snowy image).

My next step is to use an appropriate Coax of 75 ohm ( during the week end)

First step I'd try to connect a TV directly to the BV8 with a Commons 75 Ohm coax.

Set frequency to default 599 MHz - keep RF modulator to ON.

If this works try your cable with the same TV.

Next step - connect the Avant. Avant should be set to V.OPT 5 or 6 ( link TV).

As far A's I remember, an RF link amplifier should be connected...?

Actually on the BV8-40 I noticed a strange thing.

When I access the menu and set -up the modulator to ON and save teh new set up, I got the confirmation.  If I access it again I find the modulator set back to AUTO.

Is this normal ?

Hi Stefan

the suggestion helped me to come up with a solution.

I tried with a normal TV and in doing that I left the BV8-40  in MENU mode with  the modulator on ON. in this mode I saw on channel 37 ( 599Mhz) two Vertical Bars. As soon exit the menu the bars disappeared and went back to white noise. This was an evidence that the modulator always switch off if not commanded via BEOLINK.

I then tried with AVANT  using the LINK command and immediately I got the video signal ( very noisy but visible).  So now I can proceed with the next steps of using BALUN broadband for my CAT7 wiring  instead of the coax and the necessary amplifier.

Thank you all for the support.
