My quadraphonic system (using BeoLab 90s as fronts and BeoLab 5s as rears) has taken shape nicely, and I've had the chance to compare my two quad amplifiers: the Beomaster 6000 and the Beomaster 3400.

The 6000 matches better with my Beogram 6000 and Beocord 5000 Type 4705, and of course offers remote control functionality, but whilst offering spectacular clarity for acoustic music is very bass-light for rock. In fact, I have to boost the bass considerably, whereas I don't need to touch the tone controls on the Beomaster 3400.

Is this bass-light sound typical of the BM6000?

It shouldn't be, though I think the 3400 is actually a better amplifier despite being less powerful. It is based on the Beomaster 2000 whereas the 6000 is based on the 901. The difference is that the 3400 is direct coupled and has better controlled bass. It does however have the silliest tuning scale I have ever seen! So 6000 is more powerful (not that that actually matters that much) and better looking. The 3400 sounds better and is much easier to fix! I can't remember - does the 3400 have the SQ decoder? If not, the 6000 does so that is another advantage.
