I got my Beoplay H9i yesterday, and sadly I have an issue with them :(

When I listen to Diana Krall`s "Like someone in love" with ANC activated, there is a very screeching sound on every "S" she sings. Turning the ANC of makes this go away.

Could the guys with H9i`s please check if they experience the same issue?

Hi Leogoeswild,

Hmmmm.... Some questions:

- How are they connected to your source? Bluetooth or Wired?
- If Bluetooth: What is the source?
 - Is the Diana Krall recording a CODEC? (e.g. MP3) or is it uncompressed?
- is the problem on both sides of the headphones or just one?

Thanks

Hi Geoff,

They are connected via Bluetooth to a Samsung Galaxy S 7

Source is Tidal

I have the setting to HIFI (not sure what that will make the source).

The problem is only to the left ear cup.  I tried with some other songs, and the issue is located to the left ear cup.

Br,

Leo

Hello there,

I have the H9i, I checked the song that you mentioned both with cable and with bluetooth. The distortion with ANC on is there unfortunately. Also (mainly?) in the left earcup. Your problem is real, it has been addressed on other forums and by reviewers on Youtube.  It seems like the ANC compresses the sound to an extent that it cannot cope with sharper S sounds. For me this is unforgivable to be honest, I have 50 euro headphones that don't distort on ''challenges'' like these. I really love the headphones but this is an unforgivable flaw that I really hope can be fixed through a software update, otherwise B&O will have to take them back to fix this.

Geoff, will this be fixed with a software update?

Beocare has already told me to send them in to the service center.

Should I send them in or should I wait?

Having a similar problem with mine, mine don’t seem to be anywhere near as bad as yours but in quiet places with ANC on (places where ANC isn’t really needed), “S”s sound really sharp and are a bit headache inducing (both ears for me though, not just the left) - my H9s never had this problem.

Just listened to the song you mentioned (on Apple Music on an iPhone instead though) and “S”s are quite sharp on that song too - and like you said, it disappears when ANC is switched off.

Hi leogoeswild,

Thanks for the answers. I assume that you're using Bluetooth in both cases - with ANC on and ANC off... and that you're not comparing wired + ANC off to Bluetooth+ANC on. Correct?

Cheers

Hi Geoff,

The distortion in the S sounds is there both on bluetooth and on cable, when ANC is on. So the same problem occurs both wired +ANC on and bluetooth+ANC on. When ANC is off there is sharpness but no distortion. I went to the B&O store in here in Amsterdam and the H9i showmodel they had there, had the exact same problem. The employees were quite shocked about it when I demonstrated it, and said they'd report it. They advised me to send mine in for return service. But before I do, I would like to hear from you what we should do.

I am only using them with bluetooth, that is correct.

Listening to Katie Melua - Wonderful life. There is distortion in both ear cups with ANC on and off.

Gonna send these in, must be a faulty pair.

Hi.

I have tried our demo pair out using the same track using Deezer FLAC, wirelessly connected, from my iPhone 7 with and without ANC and it sounded fine.

Was about to purchase a pair when I first read this thread.... heading on a long haul flight on Friday I will wait until there is some news about a fix for the issue. Seems there always release issues with B&O/Beoplay products these days....

I just listened to the Diana Krall track on Tidal via bluetooth from Iphone.

There is terrible distortion with ANC on, like really terrible, if it had been on my speakers, i would have checked for a blown tweeter Surprise

Still more “hiss” on the S’s without ANC, but i don’t have much to compare with, with that ecxact track, so i don’t know how much there is usually.

With the Katie Mehlua track i don’t get any distortion with or without ANC.

I have tried 3 pairs of H9i's now. The distortion issue with ANC on, both wired and on bluetooth, was on all three of them. I sent my first pair to the customer service, they actually responded that it was a faulty pair and they sent me a new pair. But the new pair has the exact same issue, and the show model I tried in the B&O store in Amsterdam had the issue as well. I tried the Diana Krall song on Spotify, Tidal and Deezer. The distortion with S sounds is there on all these platforms when ANC is on.  While in the B&O store we (me and the store manager) tried the Krall song also on the H8 and on other models that they had, no distortion there.

I am a bit clueless as to what I should do now. Send this pair in for service as well? I am sure I will get a new one with the same issue. As said, it only occurs with ANC on, so I really hope that it is a thing that can be fixed with a software update. But hope is not enough, it would be quite de-stressing knowing that the problem is acknowledged and being worked on. Mr Martin could you confirm that this is an issue that can be fixed? I love the headphones but this flaw is unforgiving for the price...

Hello,

I just tried playing this track via Google Play on Bluetooth with ANC on and didn't experience this issue. My H9i's have the latest firmware.

Kind regards,

Ian

To the people who don't hear the distortion: do you use a warmer personalized tonetouch? Because I don't have the distortion either when I drag the tonetouch quite towards ''warm''. I didn't make this clear earlier but distortion is there when the tonetouch is in the middle or somewhere the bright/excited  (with ANC on, both wired and on bluetooth).

Hi everyone,

A short update: I've now been able to reproduce the problem using a production pair of H9i's, connected using Bluetooth, playing at maximum volume.

The reason the Diana Krall track causes the distortion in only the left channel is related to the reverb on the voice. The Katy Melua track causes the same artefact in both channels.

The good news is that this is fixable with a software upgrade, and that we're working on this now. I cannot say when this will be released - however, once it is released, I'll drop back in here to let you know.

Thanks for spotting this.

Cheers

Good news a fix is on the way as I have experienced the issue outlined in the OP but while listening to TuneIn Radio with ANC on.

Didn’t experience any issues on long haul flight London to Sydney listening to my own music. Other than that issue they sound and work wonderfully

I hope the software fix will fix all the issues I am experiencing.

Listening to Metallica's  Masters of Puppets album (remastered on tidal) sounds very bad with ANC on. It seems that it is mainly percussion that is the issue.

I can't say for sure as it is an album I am not too familiar with.

I think you should talk to Lars Ulrich about this, and not B&O Whistle

Hehe, I'll give him a call.

But I do experience bad sound with percussion on most music.

Just used this as an example.

I'll be more thorough in the feature and compare the sound with my H6 before posting stupid things again ;)

There’s a Beoplay App update 2.3.0 but it doesn’t seem to have resolved many issues just introduced the new colours......

Hi all

Can iPhone 8 users please tell me if they are experiencing an issue with music stopping and the play button on the phone becoming unresponsive after swiping up to transparency mode? I have tested the same headphones on an iPhone 7 and they work seamlessly. I have hard reset the iPhone8, forgotten the BT profile, reset the H9i to default and repaired. It points to a firmware issue with the iPhone 8 and would love to hear back from other users.

Thanks in advance.

Having a similar problem with my iPhone X - just got a new pair of H9is though today (really wanted a different colour 😂) so will update here later if they have the same problem.

Thanks for your reply. We actually found that there was a hardware fault and all is well with a new pair!

Exactly the same with mine - had them just over a week and this new pair seems absolutely perfect (doesn't even have the problem that this thread was made for!).

It is now 8 weeks since the issue was reproduced at B&O. Still no software update to address the issue?

I was told today by the local dealer that the software is ready and being pushed out slowly. Let’s hope it is a good update Big Smile

Oh awesome! If you get the update soon let us know please - reluctant to update myself until other people have tested because my current H9is are working perfectly at the moment 😂😂

I installed the 5.0.4 update.

Played Diana Krall - Like someone in love.

S-sounds are still hissing.

Either my unit is defective or the software doesn’t solve the problem.

Has anyone else tried?

I ended up updating for the proximity sensor fix (I had mine turned off before - works brilliantly after the update having tested it all day) but it made mine sound worse and now I can hear the sharpness 😭 Have made a new sound profile and it’s better, but I’m pretty annoyed because this pair of H9is sounded flawless out of the box.

I finally got around to sending my H9i for service.

They identified a defect almost right away, and there is a new pair on the way. Let’s hope I get a working pair Wink
