The LCD is easy enough to replace and shouldn't cost a fortune. When we change them at Wilmslow we give the whole remote a thorough valet and they come up looking as good as new.

Then its most likely NOT the display but the conductive "rubber.
Sometimes cleaning the rubber with Isopropylic alcohol can fix it, or simply removing the display an putting it back in.
