Hi all, good morning. I recently purchased a used bigram 5000 turntable. However, switched it on and all lights came. Pressed the cue button, platter spin briefly and stops but can humming sound indicating motor still on. Manually spins platter and found it spins freely at some section but then seem to jam at certain points. Does it need adjusting? Are there screws or what have you to loosen or should i remove the platter, clean and then put it back (i don know how to do that either). Can anyone help, advice, direct etc. HELP

The Beogram should have a platter that will bounce up and down - if it is fixed, then the transit screws will be tightened - this is good! I think ( it has been about 30 years since I had a 5000 - splendid deck by the way!) that you need to remove the platter and you will find three plates and screws - look at the 1800 user manual as the 5000 one has the first page missing which tells you how to release the screws!! The service manual is on site and as I see you are a gold member - thank you - you can download this. The suspension if by three leaf springs and these are adjustable if necessary. Let us know how you get on and will try to offer more help if required. Remobing the platter is actually not that easy! A plastic spatula can be helpful just to lever under one edge - don't use a screwdriver - it will scratch the aluminium!

Hi Peter

Thank you for your response and advice. I will try your suggestions. I have to say i am real novice with the system and so very cautious I don't break anything important in the process. You mentioned in your response that the system should be static and not bouncing. However, when i picked it up it was bouncing. What does that mean?

Thanks again

David

Suggests the transit screws are not locked! As suggested, take off the platter and all will become obvious. It may be rubbing because one of the leaf springs can become bent if transported incorrectly. Take the platter off, there is a sub platter underneath and you will be able to the the transit screws and plates. The screws are to be screwed right down through the hole in the plate for play, then if transporting, unscrew them so they appear above the plate, push the plate across and screw the screw down so it traps the plate and will lock the suspension down. The leaf springs are adjustable - it is in the service manual - you should be able to level the platter which may be the cause of the rubbing.
