I am working on a Beogram 3400 turntable.  I have lubricated the tonearm lift piston, and have cleaned the cogwheels and other mechanisms. It all works perfectly----for a while---then unexpectedly (and seemingly randomly, though I'm not sure about that), the tonearm does not move over the record when the START button is pushed. If I gently nudge one of the plastic cogwheels, then everything goes into motion as it should.

I don't know if this is a lubrication problem, or a problem with the electronics.

Help would be appreciated.

Hi,

When it does not work properly does the platter still rotate?

Best regards Alistair

The cam wheel with all its little arms and levers should NEVER be lubricated.
It MUST be dry and clean and very lose to work as intended.
If you lubricated any of it I suggest you clean it all off again and wipe everything dry and clean.

Only thing that must be lubricated is the cams center bearing, which could be given a little white lithium grease, but it's rarely needed - at least not yet.

Bravo Martin (as usual): I cleaned everything and now it's working beautifully.

I grew up on a farm in Oklahoma, and my dad taught me to GREASE EVERYTHING. But those were tractors, plows, and threshing machines---I guess B&O turntables require a lighter touch.

Thanks,

Steve
