I have a very nice Beogram 2400/3400 that I’ve restored to perfect working order but it needs a replacement MMC20EN cart as the stylus is missing from the one currently installed in the unit. For very obvious reasons, purchasing a new SMMC20EN cart from SoundSmith is a better option, but I’m curious about some of the USED or NOS MMC20EN carts that are being sold on eBay. There is a gent local to me that is selling one that, by all appearances, looks to be in great condition. The description says “tested in a 3400 and it sounds great, good stereo serration” etc. etc. I realize that sound quality is subjective to different ears, but I’m wondering if there are any red flags to be aware of in trying to purchase a USED cart off eBay. What are some things to look out for? Just because the pictures show what appears to be an excellent-condition stylus, does that necessarily mean the cart itself is good?
There is obviously a huge price difference between NEW and USED, but just because a MMC20EN is used, does that mean its junk and will fail in a matter of days if the cart is put back into regular use on the turntable? I have to admit that although I’ve wanted a B&O turntable since the 70s, having one now in my possession is proving to be more of a headache. The whole “proprietary” cartridge system is really becoming an annoyance. I can’t wait to hear this thing play since mechanically and cosmetically it’s in great shape (one owner it’s entire life), but I’m not sure it’s worth taking out a home improvement loan to pay for a cartridge that may not sound any different than one of my Ortofon 2m Bronze carts on another turntable in my collection.
Would really value any and all opinions on the subject.
