Helllo,

picked up a Beomaster and Beocord 5500, CX100 and some sort of Beolink controller. Got a few issues:

I've plugged my phone in TP2/AUX In, which I believe is RCA 2 and 3 from the left, row closest to the backpanel (not row closest to the DIN ports). Speakers are connected to the upper row.

1) Result is the same if source is set to AUX or TAPE 2.

2) With my phone's output volume at max, volume level 28 on the BM produces - It's fairly low. At volume level 16 it's very background, at 40 it's OK but distortion starts (without really being loud). I'm 1 meter away from the speakers. Phones out works, pretty much the same description for the same volume settings. Also, speakers don't mute when I plug in the phones

3) The sound quality is rather underwhelming and sounds "wrong"

4) I've set treble and bass to 0

5) Loudness is on

6) When speakers connected to lower row, there is no sound

7) When I click mute on the front panel or the Beolink, there's a click but nothing happens to the sound. or any indication on the front panel

8) There's a physical bridge between RCA 4 upper and lower coloumn and RCA 5 upper and lower coloumn.

9) Is there any documentation on "Life with BM5500 and Beolink"?

10) The CX 100.. sounds like bass on top, treble in middle and mid-tone at the bottom???

Is this the normal operation for the BM 5500?

I don't have any tapes to test (with) the beocord.

Yes, I found this thread: https://archivedarchivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/38923.aspx

No, problem did not resolve itself magically for me :) And I do know what a RIAA converter is :)

TAPE2/AUX are shared inputs and indeed is RCA's 2 and 3 from left.

Mute function and headphones jack mute only affect speakers 1 (lower row) and not speaker 2 (upper row).

The physical bridge between those RCA's needs to be there in order to get sound from the Beomaster, they are for connecting devices such as sound processors, eq's, etc.

Regarding the low volume on aux input are you sure is not an issue with your phone? Try connecting other sources like cd player, etc.

Adrian.

Thanks.

1) If the upper row, which is where they are connected, is speaker 2, would there be any reason for lower row not producing any sound? I think about settings, not direct fault.

2) When muted, is there supposed to say something on the front panel?

3) The volume range itself, which numbers are typical for low/normal/high volume output? With my phone maxed out, I found that 40 would be around "normal" for my ears.

1. The muting relay is often bad. This affects speaker set 1. I always replace it in all Beomasters coming in here for repairs.
Bad contact in the headphone socket can also cause speaker set 1 to mute.
No settings will mute set 1.

2. No.

3. That all depends on the signal source and the attached speakers.
4.0 sounds a bit high for normal signals and speakers, but not unusual for signals from phones. They often output very little.

Thanks a lot, Martin.

Is the muting relay a soldering proposition? I need to open the boxes to clean them anyway.

Yes, the relay is soldered in.

Luckily, it works. There was originally no sound in 1 due to .. age.. connecting and running signals for some 10-15 sec brought the connectors back to life slowly (including workable mute). Will check over some days that the situation is stable, then open it up, clean it and put it all together with some baking soda to remove smoke odors.
