Dear B&o friends,

Should I post this in dutch? To be sure it's gonna be engrish Huh?

I have a beautiful Beocord 8000 (dark wood) which plays fantastic. It really does everything just fine, it just does not record.

When I put it in record mode the sound meter doesn't show anything.

So I try a different input, like the aux from the front. Yes, succes, I have sound and the meter shows the sound playing so I think I am good.... but no, recording the tape looks fine, but playing back there is nothing.

Must be the recording head right? Is it something I can replace? I would love to make this system fully functional again. Crying

Please tell me I can fix this!!! Smile

Bad tapeheads are extremely rare in this model.
I would suspect many other things before heads.

What is the Beocord connected to? And with what cable?
Does it erase tapes when recording?

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the quick response, and giving me some hope we can manage this Big Smile

  • The Beocord is connected to a normal amplifier (Yamaha ax-590) with a 5 Pin Male Din Plug to 4 x RCA cable.
  • Some bad news guess here: It does not erase tapes while recording.
  • Is there something I can check for broken or burnt parts when I open the cover?

I tried plugging the Beocord into a beosystem 6500 with a normal din cable, this time I got the radio playing and the meters popping, but not recording again.

Sorry for asking, but are you sure, you are actually recording?

Load a tape (with intact record protection tabs).
Press RECORD OPEN
Press RECORD once - (RECORD flashes indicating record pause) - adjust record level
Press RECORD again to start recording (RECORD is lit).
Press STOP - the Beocord then records three seconds of silence and goes back to record pause.

No problem, ask anything, I want this thing solved so badly!

I am sure I am operating the thing the right way... just like you describe in the above

but something strange is happening I think, one time, I just played a cassette from the deck, while RECORD OPEN was still on... should not be that way right? Let me test it again

Ok, I've discovered something new, and I am sure this was not the case before, but the light indicating REC OPEN is ALWAYS ON. Even if I unplug and replug the whole thing in from the electric socket. REC OPEN will be showing.

But I think it does not effect the workings, before recording from AUX input

I have to press REC OPEN

then RECORD

If so I will hear the sound playing and see the meter running with the music. Other wise there will be nothing.

I also still have to press STOP etc before I can play the cassette again.

I hope we are tracing something here Sad

The Rec-Open should not be lit per default when mains is connected. And not without a tape.
Check for cracked solder joints.
Particularly where wires, plugs and connectors are soldered into circuitboards.
Check relay contacts. There is a relay close to the tapehead connector and some decks have a relay in the Dolby circuit as well.

ok, some time later, I learned to solder a little bit Unsure

I will not explain my painful process, cutting the wrong cable, and in hindsight, WHY DID I CUT ANY CABLE?

but I believe everything is back like it is supposed to be.....

The Rec Open doesn't show up anymore

but there are NEW PROBLEMS... Surprise

It does not PLAY tape anymore. I randomly hear the relay flipping up and down (my best guess)

A tape plays for a very short while and then STOPS...

pfff what can I do now?

(recording process works from what I see, it just does not record anything, but that is an old problem since it is not playing anymore)

ok, just tested a minute later, the tape can play without interruption (but no sound) and after a while I am hearing a very busy relay and the tape stops playing....

Is there a fix for this or should I just give up?

The looks from this deck are fine inside and out...

one more thing....

the wheel playing the tape keeps on spinning in standby-mode...
