Hi everyone,
Hopefully this video will give some extra connectivity ideas for those who prefer a wired connection from a classic B&O system to Beosound Balance

Ulrike:As far as Roon is concerned, Airplay control also works with any operating system such as Android, Windows or Linux. I guess a device as a remote control would be Linux based.
Thanks Steve! I agree that B&O should give us some rosewood
Sandyb: If indeed only 10% of customers use NL, that again underlines the assumption behind that decision.
If indeed only 10% of customers use NL, that again underlines the assumption behind that decision.
Yes. And what if the total number of customers includes ones who bought only BT headphones once? What if people who have only headphones and cannot even use NL are part of that statistics? Do we know factually B&O has a solid insight?
We dont know really I guess.
One has to assume they are not quite so simple as to count headphone only customers, and are actually using some real world usage data and sensibly.
But who on earth knows - but its irrelevant now, its done, NL will go.
And remember, the internal sources from their own products may well be gone too.

@steve at sounds heavenly
have you try the optical connection to a 3 part tv?
are we sure we dont have delay or lipsync here? Since you say in the video you can use the balance as a tv speaker.
Trying AP2 from my iPad to B&O devices, it is a real disaster compared to BeoLink experience .....
Examples:
(1) I take my iPad, start PLEX, select the two B&O AP2 targets, a Core and a M3 and I start streaming. Then I take my iPad agin, drop down the speakers menu, the the AP menu, then take the M3 out, music is briefly interrupted on the Core too, this kind of things don't exist with BL when a product leaves the multiroom.
(2) When I stop the PLEX flow, Core stops sending signal through the PL link to the TR1 which in its turn shuts down all speakers, this does not happen when I stop a DLNA or Deezer music flow, speakers are staying up until no activity timeout is reached.
Disappointed ....
BS Moment, BS Core, BG 4002, BC 4500, BS1, BL18, BL19, BL8000 + RCV1, A6, M5, M3, A1, P6 (tks Botty), H5, TR1
Other disappointment: When you use an alternative to iTunes in OSX Mojave, you cannot direct AP2 flow to multiple devices. Fortunately BeoLink can relay the streaming to other B&O products.
I sometimes Airplay to multiple B&O speakers, works fine - AP2 was a huge improvement on AP1.
I dont see the disaster I'm afraid.
I dont use any Apple audio programmes - be it Apple Music or Podcasts.

You can if you use Airfoil - v cheap app for OSX.
Has worked for many years.
Though yes, I agree, NL is a great help in making things a bit easier.
Welcome to the 10%.

Carolpa:NL would only be a software addition to the Balance, I presume. B&O has the software ( almost sure ) available (BS1, BS2, BS35...... etc). Maybe some tweaking has to be done. So, who would pay an additional EUR 200 to have the BeoLink/Netlink available? I would! Would that make the BS Balance more attractive?
I've read that its a hardware thing, not just a software issue.

Hi andybandy,
I haven't had a chance to try this myself yet, but B&O's design team have told me this will be possible. I hope to be able to confirm the latency via the optical input in the coming weeks.

I'm totally with you dont worry.
There are so many aspects of this modern platform driven world that are sub optimal.
TuneIn integrated is great, but then BBC radio disappears from it - so close to useless.
Moment remains imperfectly reliable - I tried mine yesterday, integrated with my BV, and nothing worked. So it was stream from phone, or use Tidal app on Apple TV. End of the day, it took 5 minutes to get anything started.
B&O say they are focussed on experiences. Whatever that meant in the past, it will mean something different, and more limited in the future.
Given how sketchy the Moment is, I'm preys sure I'll just get a Roon capable 3rd party streamer (or streamer / DAC combo) and connect it to my B&O BV, distribute via NL for now, and consider my options when my BV's need replacing in a few years.
mbolo01: Sandyb: You can if you use Airfoil - v cheap app for OSX. Has worked for many years. Though yes, I agree, NL is a great help in making things a bit easier. Welcome to the 10%. I was a big fan of Airfoil years ago, despite AP 1 being unstable, to drive speakers connected to AE as well as an amp with AP onboarded. I joined the B&O world only 6 years ago starting with BLs, followed by a Moment which was meeting my requirement of simply and jointly driving a large local digital music library, a large online music library and many internet radios, B&O best creation for a modern world IMO. I then reached the Nirvana when B&O released its Multiroom solution as it was what I was waiting since ages to distribute music to smaller single speakers located in appropriate rooms without the need of a NASA type of central control point, or the need to carry a phonemote in my pocket all the time. I then progressively acquired several Beoplay products, Essence remotes and my dream turned into reality, I became a « press to join » addict, just as my wife became addict too, which was a great achievement for me ! With the end of the Moment and the probable drop of B&O multiroom, DLNA and music services embedded in products, I feel like I’m back 5 years ago and probably 40 years ago as I’m moving back progressively to Vinyle and cassette where the concept of remote control and sound distribution is very distant. I’m proud to be part of the 10%, I fear to be part of the 0% unless B&O surprise me.

I guess you are right there (too).
IMO it is a very bad marketing decision from B&O.
They should have launched this product as an AP2/CC streaming device - not naming it Beosound, but Beostream....or whatever - in order to make it clear that it is different.
To see how it will be accepted in the market - both in the new and in the old market.
After evaluating this, a decision about whether to include the NL functions (like in the BS 2/GA or the A9 MK4) should be taken.
I know.....whether that would make any difference in the end, is hard to say. But it would have been a more honest take on what B&O will be in the future.
Now it is more like a hit in the face of those (rumoured) 10%, who probably have made far more than 10% of the purchases in the last years.
Furthermore - if that new Halo remote really can add something to a pure AP2/CC streamer (from B&O), they should have launched it along with the BeoStream Balance!
P.S. I wonder why no one reacted to my comment/question about the need for the (hardware) remote, BeoRemote One in the future......when there will be no NL and no Bang & Olufsen app controlling of the devices anymore.
Isn’t anyone using the BeoRemote with their audio devices???

Hi,
I can confirm that it works with my BS2, setting via the app:
Settings => Sound => Line-In => Set Line-In to "Low" and below disable "Delay" and confirm settings.
I've made some screenshots and I hope the German instead of English labeling is understandable.
Works perfectly though NOT optical.

As you confirm, using rhe line input on the newer B&O devices (with line-in sense) is not a problem.....that’s not new.
Whether the option of choosing a specific delay with the Balance is there/in the settings of the Balance, is a question that yet has to be answered....originally this feature (as the pics show) was there in order to get syncroniced sound in BL-multiroom.
There is little sense in telling us that it is possible to have syncroniced sound from a tv (using optical) without having tested it.........just showung a cable does not help anyone (sorry Steve).
I rember that this failed with the Stage due to the processing of the sound in the Stage.
Will that be similar with the Balace? There is a lot of processing goung on there too..
We need practical tests....please!
Steve also in the video mentions ‘stereo pairing’.......just so - but without explaing how that should be done!
(I know, you can stereo pair via CC, but that is not the case here.....when we speak of cabled connection.
Steve, please comment on this!
In a use case, where you would have only one Balance cinnected to a tv.....where should you place that?
We know that it has an inpressing ‘stereo-like’ sound, when playing music sources.
But where to put it to have a coherent experience of both picture and sound from the tv from your seating position?
I guess in front of the tv is no option ;-(
Having two of these set up for left and right could be awesome.....but how do we do that???

Yes, I agree.....but wouldn’t that be hisory, soon (if you’d follow the new B&O-route).
Hi MM,
Yes, that is a good point, I will be doing some further tests very soon to confirm the best for use with a non-B&O TV via optical. I'm just waiting for a call back from B&O Technical regarding minimum latency settings.
For stereo pairing, B&O have told me prior to the launch that you can cable into one speaker (analogue audio or optical) and then wirelessly link the second speaker. In this case, the speakers would be placed either side of the TV.
Using a single speaker directly in front/below the TV would be interesting, as this appears to have the capability to give some measure of stereo spread from a single point.....again, further tests to follow asap.
Sorry, duplicate post deleted...
My dealer hinted that there will be separate solutions for TV released on the new Audio Engine. We badly need a successor to the BeoLink handbook/BeoIntegration Catalogue.

Could you please do some following up on this.
That is nothing that I have heard of.
Apart from pairing through CC the only orher way I can think of is using BT like with the smaller devices and the S3.
Would be nice to have this clarified.
However, when I think about stereo pairing these ‘speakers’, I immediately think that the room compensation feature should be taken into account for the two speakers to work together in the riom.
As of the launch date, pairing is available either through Chromecast or via a cabled input using a specially wired cable to both speakers. The technical guy at B&O who I spoke to prior to the launch said that other wireless pairing options may become available in a forthcoming software update, ie. to allow a wired input to one speakers and a wireless link to a second speaker, although this doesn't appear to be available at the launch.
Room compensation is on a similar principle to Beolab 5, ie. the speakers each measure the transfer function of the room from the speaker position, instead of taking a measurement at the listening position. Hence, each speaker should account for its position with respect to room nodes as well as the overall room response.

This ‘specially wired cable’ is that one from you or simething that the B&O deales have access to?
Wating for that software update - eager to hear two set probably up with a tv/BV.

Airplay or CC are just “surrogate” solutions for Roon If B&o would support Roon’s Raat then you would have all benefits of Roon.

Yes, you are right, though CC built-in sounds better than AP, but for that reason I thought about the optical connection and if it would work to connect a RAAT speaking streamer to it.
I have a small unused Raspi Digione with spdif HAT, set as a ROON bridge with Dietpi on sd card, so I could try it out ;)

Sadly this all demonstrates another failure of audio strategy which abandons yet another generation of technology to get buggier and buggier with services inevitably being lost over time. BeoSound 5, BeoSound Moment and now BeoSound Multiroom have all been expensive beta tests for us B&O owners, never developed as intimated and rarely stable.
If either AirPlay 2 or ChromeCast were functional multiroom solutions, I suspect not many of us would care about this change. But they are not, and so B&O remove themselves from the multiroom marketplace, leaving it to specialists. Where I believe they may have got this judgement wrong is that they are also specialists, whether they like it or not, and the regression of BeoPlay proves it. Unlike volume competitors HEOS and BlueSound, Sonos can't even be bothered to sue B&O (unless that's the reason they are ditching BeoLink Multiroom - to avoid a crippling court case).
B&O have always had small numbers of customers who are highly loyal and buy large numbers of products. Without any USPs left, they are simply another manufacturer of nice speakers, and nowadays there are many others competing for that space. How good they do or don't sound is something most people in the marketplace for a nice new speaker will never find out nowadays, as they buy blind off the internet.
I hope they prove me wrong, but history tells me that they will take at least 3 years to get this platform working well, and by then they will be in the throes of abandoning it for one reason or another.
Esax:Sounds like a beolab 50
Really?! That's kind of promising. I haven't listened to it yet, but if what you're saying is true, then it sort of makes them promising as a solid option as a stereo pair for a main sound system.... or am I hoping for too much?
On a side note, your comment on temperature is a bit concerning. Implementing large heat fins would have been interesting to include in the design, but we're way passed the design phase now haha

The cable for wired stereo pairing of the Balance is one that I have tested, there is nothing available from B&O dealers as far as I am aware (unless they get it from me!) I have a range of wired options for the Balance to allow it to be used with any classic or vintage B&O music system made since 1961.
