Hi all,
Recently I decided to restore my dads old Beogram 2000. It has been sitting in the garage for over 20 years now and now that my girlfriend is starting to get into playing records as well I decided it's a good time to restore this beauty. Today I powered it up for the first time again and immediately noticed some issues. I hope someone can help me out with these. In short here's what I found out:
1) The belt is completely worn, I need a replacement2) There is a lot of resistance when rotating the platter3) There is a loose wire below the aluminium plate4) The lid does not close all the waySo let's get into a little more detail.1) The belt is worn. Not surprising at all, and it shouldn't really be an issue. However, I'm having trouble finding the correct belt. This is the 5821 model, which has a flat belt. When I measure the belt, the total length is about 760mm, but I'm guessing it's quite streched. So a new belt will probably be shorter. The height of the belt is 5mm. However, practically NONE of the online stores offering these belts state the dimensions of the belt, which just seems strange to me. One thing does keep popping up: FM 27.2. This should be a flat belt with a length of 27.2 inches. This is approximately 690mm. That seems a little bit short to me, but perhaps this is the original length? Can anyone confirm or maybe link to the correct belt that can be ordered in Europe?
2) There is a lot of resistance when rotating the platter. I've done some troubleshooting, and found out one of the plastic tabs that (I think) are supposed to keep the disc below the platter in place pushes down on that disc, making it difficult to rotate it. See the attached picture below. This is the tab in the 'engaged' position. You can rotate them so that they are out of the way. In that orientation none of the tabs touch the disc and the platter can rotate freely and without resistance. So are these just transport tabs? Or are they supposed to be engaged when operating the device? The other two are not touching the disc when engaged by the way.
3) The loose wire. So this seems kind of strange to me. There's a stranded copper wire coming from the tone arm below the aluminium base plate. This copped wire gets unstranded at a certain point, and the 4 resulting copper wires are soldered to a small PCB. The topmost solder point (for ground, yellow arrow in the picture) is not populated by a wire and there is 1 loose wire (red arrow in the picture). Am I right in assuming this wire should be solderen onto the ground pad? Also, all of these copper wires seem to be touching each other and they do not seem to be shielded in any way. So aren't those signal being mixed anyway?
4) The lid does not close all the way. When I close the lid, there's about a 5mm gap between the base plate and the lid. Is there any way to correct this?
Thanks in advance for any advice! Can't wait to get this one working again.
Regards,
William
