Hi All

Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

I bought a (working) 1202 a few days ago just to use while I await some components to arrive from Beoparts to get my 4002 over to a local B&O tech for refurbishment. I thought might as well listen to my records while I'm waiting.

I decided to set the speed using the dial on the side and it's gone pear shaped from there. The motor slowed way down, stopped, stuttered (dial not turned full either way) and never came right. I opened it up to see if something simple like a cog or belt or whatever may have slipped, nothing, pieced back together and motor doesn't even spin now. re-opened and found this thin purple wire coming from the power supply that goes to nowhere? it must have come off. Can anyone tell me where this connects? could this be the issue?

thanks in advance, TBH this is only a temp thing until I get my 4002 fully working so I guess if I cant get it going I'll move on but the brief interaction I had with it working it sounded pretty good !

cheers

The small lead will not be the reason.
Will the motor rotate easily by hand? If you spin it up using your fingers, will it rotate for a few seconds before coming to a halt?

Hi Martin

i just tried this and no, the motor won’t spin freely, it’s very stiff. I might strip it down and re lubricate it. I have some silicon grease I used to free up the tone arm lifter on the 4002, will this do ? Otherwise I’m awaiting some turntable oil arriving soon?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, much appreciated.

I just repaired a Beogram 3000 (4228) with the same motor. Disassembling the motor is fairly straightforward if you use this site or youtube to help. However, if you clean and simply lube or oil the spindle bearings then it's going to slow down again pretty quickly. That's what happened to me. I bought a food bag vacuum (15 GBP) and let the oil seep into the brass bearings over 24 hrs and it's been working perfectly now for a month.

Bad lubrication media or method - or both.
it must be done right (vacuum) and with the right oil.
And if it was already done wrongly, all of this will have to be cleaned away first (acetone bath).

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I have some Liberty bearing oil arriving soon - is this what I should use?, in the meantime just to check if the motor was still operational I stripped everything down, cleaned out as much of the old lube from the brass bearings as I could, oiled with Singer sewing machine oil ( I know, not ideal, this was just to test if it was working, I'll strip it back down, clean it up and use the bearing oil / vacuum / soak method when it arrives) success ! for now at least it is working. Expecting my 4002 parts soon (thanks Martin) so I can get the 4002 restoration underway. That one's a keeper so I'm hand balling it to my local B&O tech to do.

cheers again jamospingal and Martin for the assistance.

I had already ordered a couple of small vials of Linn LP12 recommended oil and used it. I believe it's Mobil Velocite #6. This may not be the best choice since I've now seen other suggestions on the forum. But it does seem to have worked fine.

I'd like to say that 1202 is a keeper too: after a while watching every single move of the 4002, you'll want to look at the beautifull concorde arm landing on the edge of your record. If you have both that good to swap them from time to time to always stay amazed.
