i have recently inherited a beogram 5000 which had been in storage for around 2 years. Amp tuner seems to work fine but when I powered up the CD50 the loading tray was very reluctant to take in the disk, after a few seconds there was a pop and acrid smoke came from the top right hand corner. I popped the lid and could see a rectangular component that had blown. I took the unit to a local repair shop where they replace the blown part. They reported that initially the player worked, but deteriorated until it refused to read the cds and they could go no further.
I have brought it back and checked it, the carrier takes in the cd, it lifts it up, the small motor starts up and the disk spins, but after a few seconds it ejects the disk.
Can anyone please help
The burned component will be the suppressor capacitor. Not uncommon.
Your CD50 will need a good spindle motor service. The spindle motor bearings dry out and the motor can no longer reach the correct speed for reading the TOC.Also very common.

Thanks for replying so quickly, is the spindle motor service something that I could tackle myself? Otherwise any idea where I could take it to. I am based in East Anglia, UK.
thank you.
Hello Smevs, the CD50 takes the CDs 'upside-down'. Just to be sure.
Thanks Johan, yes I did know the cds go in label down, thank you.
